Princess Anne’s ‘blunt’ remark to Paul Hollywood about his 'sickening' appearance

The Great British Bake Off judge collected his MBE at the royal estate last year, and had the pleasure of meeting Princess Anne.
Sometimes Anne delivers the honours, and other times it’s her brother King Charles, or even Prince William. But when Paul received his in 2024, it was Princess Anne giving them out.
Princess Anne made ‘blunt’ remark to Paul Hollywood
However, the 59-year-old baker, who was honoured due to his services to baking and broadcasting, found himself in a very honest conversation with the Princess Royal.
One year on from the encounter, Paul is looking back and has revealed what Anne actually said to him.
In a recent interview with Women’s Weekly, quoted by OK Magazine, Paul admitted he had a “charming and fascinating” conversation with Princess Anne.
The first thing she said to me was, ‘Where did you get that sickening tan?’
However, it wasn’t long before the conversation took an unexpected turn.
Paul revealed that Princess Anne asked about his “sickening tan”.
He said: “The first thing she said to me was, ‘Where did you get that sickening tan?'”
It turns out, right before his honour ceremony, Paul had been on holiday enjoying the sun. And so his appearance prompted the princess’ witty remark.
But Paul found the comment funny, and the pair were able to talk about other things.
What else did the pair speak about?
He said: “We talked about where I had been on holiday. Then she said, ‘I really like Chelsea buns.’ She was charming and fascinating.”
After Paul learned that little bit of information, he offered to bake her some of his own, to which she agreed. Shortly after his visit to Windsor, he had some delivered to her directly.
Reflecting on getting honoured by Princess Anne, Paul Hollywood continued: “The TV is the icing on the cake. My career was what I was proud of. Because a lad from the north-west ended up going all over the world, doing a job that I didn’t think could take me to those places. To end up standing in front of royalty was amazing.”
Over the years, Princess Anne has been known for her witty responses and honest remarks, something which used to be her late father Prince Philip’s go-to also. So, it seems she certainly hasn’t lost that spark.
And as one of the most loved royals, it’s claimed that Princess Anne is currently teaching Princess Charlotte what it takes to step into her role – which could well be Charlotte’s one day.
