Meghan Markle will no longer appear at a museum gala amid the ongoing protests in Los Angeles.

The Duchess of Sussex, 43, was meant to appear at a gala hosted in the city this week. However, the protests have put paid to these plans.

Meghan Markle’s museum gala appearance cancelled amid Los Angeles protests

Saturday night (June 14) would have seen Meghan appear at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County for the Night of Wonder.

However, protests erupted in Los Angeles recently following raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.

The National Guard has been called into the city in an attempt to keep the peace.

In light of these developments, the gala will not go ahead.

Los Angeles needs us to channel our energy toward supporting our neighbors.

In a statement, the President and Director of NHMLAC, Dr Lori Bettison-Varga, said: “As an institution ‘of, for, and with Los Angeles,’ our responsibility during challenging times is clear: to serve as a community resource focused on healing and unity, not celebration.

“Los Angeles needs us to channel our energy toward supporting our neighbors and demonstrating the values that make our city and county strong.”

The museum’s Board of Trustee’s leadership and event partners were unanimous in their agreement that postponing the gala was “the appropriate response to current community circumstances”.

Meghan was set to speak at museum gala

The museum will reschedule the gala for a later date.

Meghan had been set to speak at the event, which aimed to honour her efforts in advancing community wellbeing and expanding opportunities for marginalised groups.

Meghan found herself in a similar situation earlier this year, having to delay something due to events in LA.

In January, she delayed the release of her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, following wildfires across the city.

Meghan’s gala would have clashed with Trooping the Colour

Had it gone ahead, Meghan’s appearance at the gala would have taken place on the same day as Trooping the Colour – the monarch’s official birthday parade.

This weekend will mark King Charles’ third birthday parade as king.

Reports claimed earlier this week that, like last year, the king will not take the salute on horseback. Sources claim that it would be safer and more comfortable for the monarch to arrive at the parade in a carriage, as he continues to undergo cancer treatment.

The report also claims that the monarch may never ride a horse again at the parade.

He took the salute on horseback in 2023, the first time a monarch had done so since his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, did in 1986.
