Meghan Markle has appeared on Emma Grede’s podcast, admitting, she’d rewrite her public narrative by asking people to “tell the truth”.

The Duchess of Sussex is getting candid about media scrutiny, public perception and regaining control of her own story.

On the latest episode of Aspire with Emma Grede, which debuted on Tuesday (June 17), Meghan, 43, opened up about how she’s been perceived in the public eye, and what she would change if given the chance.

Host Emma Grede, 42, founding partner of SKIMS and CEO of Good American, prompted Meghan with a thoughtful question.

She asked: “If you could rewrite your public narrative from scratch, is there anything that you would do differently?”

Without missing a beat, Meghan replied: “Yes. I would ask people to tell the truth.”

Both women laughed earlier in the conversation when comparing Meghan’s early fame as an actress on Suits to the global attention she received after marrying Prince Harry in 2018 and joining the royal family.

I would ask people to tell the truth.

“It is, Emma! It’s very different,” Meghan said when asked if the scrutiny of her current life felt worlds apart from being recognised on the street during her acting days.

The podcast episode comes at a time when Meghan is re-emerging in the public space on her own terms.

Meghan’s response reflects her long-standing frustration with how the media and public have shaped her story.

Both she and Harry have spoken openly about feeling unprotected by the palace, particularly amid the increasing scrutiny during Meghan’s time as a working royal.

Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, the couple has relocated to Montecito, California, where they’re raising their children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.

Now settled in her home state, Meghan is building a new chapter.

Her latest projects include the Netflix cooking-lifestyle series With Love, Meghan, the launch of her lifestyle brand As Ever, and her new podcast Confessions of a Female Founder with Lemonada Media.

During the podcast, Meghan and Grede also discussed Meghan’s journey as a founder, including her first business venture selling scrunchies as a child, and the highs and lows of launching a brand.

The two also touched on Meghan’s now-viral “Baby Mama Dance” video. The controversial video was posted to Instagram on June 4 in honour of her daughter Lilibet’s birthday.

The footage showed a heavily pregnant Meghan seemingly twerking with Harry in her hospital room before Lili’s birth. However, it sparked criticism with a royal commentator branding it “vulgar”.

“That was four years ago,” Meghan said on the podcast. “It’s a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there’s still a whole life, a real, authentic, fun life, that’s happening behind the scenes.”

She added: “I’m just grateful. Now, being back on social as well, I have a place where I can share it on my own terms.”

Meghan officially returned to Instagram in January 2025, marking her first time back on her personal social media since 2017.

She and Prince Harry closed down their shared @SussexRoyal account in 2020 after stepping away from official royal duties.

Now, Meghan appears focused on one thing: reclaiming her narrative and telling her story, on her terms.
