When Meghan Markle faced pushback on The View during co-host's heated debates
She's been a hot topic on the talk show before...The Duchess of Sussex is often debated on morning news programs and talk shows, but what is Meghan Markle‘s relationship with US staple The View and their hosts?
The royal has been in the limelight for a number of years. From her time on hit legal drama Suits to her fairytale wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.
It’s no surprise that with her high-profile appearances, she’ll be a hot topic on most discussion panels. That’s exactly what happened more than once on The View, so we take a look at how Meghan Markle has been discussed on the hit show.
The View star ‘refuses’ to talk when Meghan Markle crops up
Whoopi Goldberg made it clear she’s had enough of discussing Meghan Markle, so when the topic came up on The View, she pretended to go to sleep.
The 69-year-old refused to join in during the Hot Topics segment of the show in April 2025.
It stemmed from the controversy over the Duchess using her HRH title in a printed note she sent to her friend Jamie Kern Lima. Meghan had quit her job as a senior royal with her husband Prince Harry in 2020. As part of them leaving The Firm, they were not allowed to use their HRH titles in professional situations.
A spokesperson for the As Ever founder clarified she has not used it in this capacity, and it was a private note.
As The View co-hosts began talking about Meghan Markle, Whoopi Goldberg declared: “Wake me up when you’re done!”
But she ‘woke up’ to make a point about how she felt the fact Lima shared the note publicly was ‘cringier’.
Whoopi said: “To me, I think if someone gives you a gift … I don’t feel like she needed to show that.”
‘It doesn’t work’
In 2023, Whoopi slammed the Sussexes again. This time? It was about their ‘near catastrophic car chase’ in New York.
The Ghost actress said: “Others said it wasn’t bad, but I think people of New York knew if it was possible to have car chases in New York, we’d all make it to the theatre on time.”
She was making fun of the ‘chase’ aspect of the couple’s claim.
But she continued: “I think they were dealing with aggressive paparazzi yeah, but I don’t think it was where you you’re watching it on TV. It just doesn’t work on New York.”

Deal or No Deal
The Sister Act star also had an issue with Meghan Markle on The View, when discussing how the royal said she felt objectified when appearing on Deal or No Deal and decided to leave.
Meghan told guest Paris Hilton on her podcast Archetypes that she felt she was only there for her ‘looks’.
But her thoughts did not resonate with Goldberg in October 2022.
Whoopi said: “On that show, you basically had a suitcase, and they wanted to know is this the deal you want or not the deal you want. I don’t know if the people who are sitting there, are thinking about you like ‘that’. They’re thinking, ‘I want the money’.
“The objectification might be coming from you and how you felt how these women were being portrayed.”
She added performers needed to make the ‘change’, as performers ‘take the gig’.
The View host Whoopi Goldberg told a joke about Meghan Markle
The Duchess of Sussex has been open about the issues she’s faced after becoming a part of the royal family, which included more attention online – and not all of it was positive.
Whoopi once cracked a joke related to the allegations Meghan spoke about in her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021.
It came after reports a comedy club in the UK had banned audience members with cosmetic fillers are performers complained they couldn’t tell if they were laughing. Whoopi then explained the difficult stand-up audience she once had in London. She explained she cracked a joke at the time Harry married the TV star.
“They kept saying ‘she’s a black woman’, Whoopi recalled.
“And I said, ‘well y’all are just worried that you’re gonna wake up and the kid’s gonna be black.”
The View viewers gasped over the Meghan Markle joke, but the comedian said her audience began laughing after a moment as it “hadn’t occurred to them.”
Did Meghan Markle appear on the view?
No, Meghan Markle has not been a guest on The View, either from her time as an actress in Suits or after marrying Prince Harry. The royal has appeared on other programs, including The Ellen DeGeneres Show as well as The Drew Barrymore Show in March to promote her Netflix series With Love, Meghan. Rumours of the royal making an appearance on The View emerged in June 2025 after a fictional story about a heated exchange went viral on social media. However, this exchange did not take place and Meghan has not appeared on the show.
