Prince William ‘relatability’ as future king will push the monarchy into modern times

The monarchy could get more relatable

As Prince William prepares to step into his role as king one day, his “relatability” may be the thing to keep the monarchy modern.

Speculation is already underway for what things will look like with William as king. Over the years, the monarchy has been trying to stay in the modern era. And it looks like that is set to just become more and more present.

When Prince William becomes king, not only will he have some big decisions to make regarding other royals titles – including his own daughter – but he will also aim to stay relatable to the general public.

Prince William ‘modernising’ monarchy when king

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told The Daily Mail that William will make sure the monarchy is still okay for service in this day and age.

He said: “As heir to the throne, Prince William will inherit a role which he could be called upon to full at any time.”

Richard feels that William has “already established a reputation diplomacy” as the monarchy, both in the era of Queen and more recently in the time of Donald Trump as president. But it seems William may also want to make some changes to make things more modern than it is.

In a bid to keep the monarchy moving and fresh, William could decide to get rid of certain events. But it seems there are a few that has too much value to lose.

Richard said: “William also wants to change things, and modernise aspects of the monarchy. While maintaining traditions which are valuable, such as the Opening of Parliament and Trooping the Colour.”

But it seems William is already making sure campaigns that are close to his heart have a moment to be seen and heard. One of which is his passion to help with environmental issues.

William inherited the Dukedom of Cornwall, and is currently planning on helping to change the lives of individuals in any way he can. And one of his main areas of assist is in combating homelessness.

Richard believes that William’s “promotion” of environmental issues is more “relatable” than the actual campaigning.

What else will change?

This isn’t the first time reports suggested William will modernise the monarchy. Royal author Tom Quinn explained the monarchy will look completely different.

He claimed it would “look much less formal. Less stiff than it has been under King Charles”.

“What we can expect to see when William and Kate take the throne is a much more emotionally engaged couple. It’s partly because they want to be a king and queen who are seen to engage much more with ordinary people in a relaxed way.”

However, royal biographer Robert Hardman disagreed with that, believing the monarchy will stay the same.

In the same interview, he admitted it will remain the same, “Just as it hasn’t changed with King Charles”.

Although, he does think William’s coronation will be “a very different affair” compared to Charles. Instead he thinks it will be “less ceremony”.  And some elements will be “contemporary”.
