It appears King Charles made an interesting request for the Sugababes to be played at Buckingham Palace.

The King’s Trust Awards reception took place on Wednesday (June 25) ahead of today’s actual ceremony. King Charles, 76, met numerous celebrities who publicly support The King’s Trust – a charity which was set up by the monarch in 1976 to help young people access opportunities.

It appears the reception was a blast, with some celebs seemingly recreating that Meghan and Harry hospital video.

And it seems the king wanted to get more involved with the music side of things himself. So, he put in a request.

King Charles asked for Sugababes to be played at Buckingham Palace

Amongst the famous faces meeting King Charles at Buckingham Palace was Radio 1 DJ Melvin Odoom. He will be performing a DJ set for the red carpet arrivals at the ceremony today (June 26).

Wanting to make sure King Charles is happy with the music that’s played, Melvin asked him: “Any tunes you want, let me know.”

Melvin opened up about his conversation with Charles after the reception.

But it seems Charles’ request also showed that the monarch perhaps hasn’t moved to using streaming services for his music just yet.

Melvin explained to PA News Agency: “He [the king] asked for the Sugababes CD to be played.

“I didn’t want to say to him that we don’t use CDs anymore. I would be using my USB, but I will drop the Sugababes.”

It also appears that King Charles wasn’t lying about his love for the Sugababes.

I would be using my USB, but I will drop the Sugababes.

The girl band heard the news, and they seemed delighted by his choice of music.

After the reception, member Keisha Buchanan also said: “That’s very, very cool to know that he requested us.”

When the Sugababes met King Charles, they also informed him they had been performing for 25 years. And it seems he wanted to celebrate the achievement.

Kiesha continued: “He said he wanted a CD. And we think we will introduce him to Overload first. He was really lovely.”

The King’s Trust ceremony

The reception preceded the awards ceremony at London’s Royal Festival. It marks nearly five decades of the Trust’s work, significantly improving the lives of disadvantaged youth.

Initially, King Charles set up the Trust when he was a prince. It will mark its 50th anniversary in 2026.

In 1976, when Charles left the Royal Navy, he used the £7,400 he got in severance pay to fund a number of community schemes. And it was those early initiatives that acted as the founding projects for his charity.

British TV presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, who serve as the Trust’s goodwill ambassadors, will host the awards ceremony this year.

Speaking about the scripts for the following ceremony, Dec joked that Charles may even contribute.

According to reports, Dec said: “He’s [Charles] going to do some script writing for us. It’s always gratefully received.”
