'Superstition' behind Queen Elizabeth II's outfit at Princess Diana's wedding to Prince Charles

Queen Elizabeth's children haven't always been lucky in love

Queen Elizabeth II’s own royal wedding was one to remember – but her outfit to son Charles’ nuptias to Princess Diana caused a stir.

The late monarch and her groom, Prince Philip, went on to have the longest marriage in the history of the British monarchy.

Evidently, a stark contrast to the marriages of many of her family members.

Elizabeth’s children Charles, Anne and Andrew have all been divorced and it seems their weddings all had one thing in common…

Queen Elizabeth II’s ‘cold’ wedding style sparked ‘superstition’

It might seem far-fetched, but it is eyebrow-raising to discover Queen Elizabeth rocked very similar outfits to each wedding of her later divorced children, sparking a strange pattern…

Queen Elizabeth attended the royal weddings of all her children and grandchildren. Although in the scheme of things she only wore blue just a handful of times, when she wore the colour is all the more jaw-dropping.

The late queen sported various shades of blue at Princess Anne’s wedding to Mark Phillips in 1973, at Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding in 1981 and at Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew’s nuptials in 1986.

The queen even wore blue to her sister Princess Margaret’s wedding in 1960 – which also ended in divorce.

Although it may have had the opposite effect, it is believed the queen wore the colour for a very specific reason.

A style expert chatting to The Express previously commented on the topic, stating: “There’s an old superstition on wearing blue to weddings – ‘Married in blue, you will always be true.’

“Therefore it’s surprising that the queen has worn blue to so many royal weddings which have ended in divorce.

“Blue can often symbolise strength and authority, so it’s definitely a colour that’s fit for a queen. It’s interesting that both the queen and the Queen Mother wore blue to Diana and Sarah Ferguson’s weddings. The similar colour choices show the unity and bond the two had, showing the love the queen has for her mother and family.”

They continued: “Blue can be seen as a cold colour, whereas yellow, green and purple are much warmer tones which match the general feeling of weddings and celebrations of love.”

Queen Elizabeth’s change in wardrobe

It seems after such bad luck, the queen went on to switch up her wedding attire, sporting yellow to Kate Middleton’s wedding and green to Meghan Markle’s.

Both of these colours represent new beginnings and growth, so hopefully they are lucky shades for The Firm.

Regardless of the true reasoning behind the aforementioned marriage breakdowns, Elizabeth didn’t take them lightly.

Queen Elizabeth II’s ‘annus horribilis’

Back in 1992, the queen admitted just how difficult it had been to endure the separations of her children and their partners.

During that harrowing year for Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and Princess Diana separated, just 15 years after their lavish royal wedding.

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson also split.

That same year, Anne also divorced Mark Phillips and a fire destroyed parts of the royal residence at Windsor Castle. The queen dubbed 1992 as her Annus Horribilis, meaning a year of misfortune or disaster.

In a speech given at Guildhall to mark the 40th anniversary of her Accession, the queen stated: “1992 is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure.

“In the words of one of my more sympathetic correspondents, it has turned out to be an ‘Annus Horribilis’. I suspect that I am not alone in thinking it so.”
