Princess Diana’s iconic outfits at Wimbledon

1981 saw a young Diana, then Lady Diana, attending the tennis championships in London. It was here she wore a striking, floral wrap dress.

The red and blue number, now reflective of her youth, was a perfectly colourful yet seemingly comfortable option. Especially as Diana was at a time in her life where she was easing into the public eye.

By then, Diana and Charles were said to have already been courting for a year.

Although, it took the then Prince of Wales another two years to pop the question.

By 1984, Diana was now known to us as the Princess of Wales.

She had wed Charles a year prior in a jaw-dropping royal ceremony where she wore an unbelievable David and Elizabeth Emanuel silk and taffeta dress with a 25-foot train and was now pregnant with her first child, Prince William.

Whilst attending the famed tournament, which is known for its typically warm temperatures, Diana wore a long, red and white pinstripe sheath dress.

The dress allowed her movement whilst navigating a growing bump and still showed off her bright personality,.

The long-sleeve ensemble also featured a playful pussy bow detail and slightly puffed sleeves.

Just two years later, Diana was snapped at Wimbledon looking a little less chipper.

The year was 1986, a period since been said to be the year she and her husband Charles had begun living their lives separately.

By that time, Diana had already welcomed her two sons, William and Harry.

Her two pregnancies that allegedly triggered postpartum depression and Charles was said to have entered into an affair with his now wife, Queen Camilla.

Royal Biographer Penny Junor describes 1986 as “a critical sort of low,” for Charles and Diana’s marriage.

The Princess of Wales’ very ’80s Wimbledon style

Despite this, Princess Diana attempted to uphold her role.

Consequently, she attended Wimbledon, frequented by the royals, where she rocked a contrastingly fun, polka dot dress.

Diana complemented the look with a pair of very ’80s Aviator sunglasses.

By 1989, Diana was opting for a more classic, timeless style. That year at Wimbledon, she stunned in a chic, pastel blue dress with large buttons and complemented by gold and pearl earrings.

The Princess was snapped attending a match between John McEnroe and Mats Wilander alongside her friend Kate Menzies.

In 1991, Diana had reverted back to her colourful roots.

She sported a bright purple blouse, a pleated skirt and accessorised with an eye-catching, wide, white, statement belt.

Looking at snaps of her that year, it would be hard to imagine the seemingly relaxed princess had separated from her husband just a year earlier and was battling scrutiny in the media.

Princess Diana 30 years ahead of 2025’s Wimbledon fashion trend
