Queen Victoria wasn’t shy about the details when it came to writing in her diary.

When it comes to the monarch, arguably the most enduring image in the public consciousness is Victoria’s relationship with Prince Albert.

So it isn’t much of a surprise to learn that the smitten queen took to her diary to pen the details about her romance with her husband…

Queen Victoria’s ‘thirsty’ diary entries

According to History Hit’s Dr Kate Lister, amongst the reported 62 million words Victoria wrote in her diary, she often gushed about her husband.

The Betwixt The Sheets podcast host explained in a chat with MailOnline’s podcasters Robert Hardman and Kate Williams that Victoria was delighted when Prince Albert was presented to her as a potential match.

Especially as it meant the 18-year-old princess finally had a chance at freedom, away from her allegedly domineering mother, the Duchess of Kent.

“In her diaries, Victoria wrote how she felt this immediate outpouring of love for Prince Albert. The Queen had a pretty miserable childhood, so when they get married at this very young age, all this devotion just comes streaming out of her. In 1839, when she first sees Albert climb the steps of Windsor Castle, she writes how he is the most handsome prince in Europe.

“Later that year, Victoria describes Albert coming in from a rainy day, saying: ‘He looks so handsome in his white cashmere britches with nothing on underneath.'”

Queen Victoria gushes about her wedding night

Victoria was also said to have labelled her wedding night with Albert as the “happiest day of her life.”

Williams joked that Victoria was “totally thirsty,” for her new husband.

“After her wedding night, Victoria says that she didn’t think it was possible to be so happy. She talks about the bliss of watching him shave, and how wonderful it is when he helps her put on her stockings. She wrote: ‘I never spent such an evening. My dearest Albert, sat on a footstool beside by my side – his excessive love and affection gave me feelings of heavenly love and happiness. He clasped me in his arms and we kissed each other again and again. Oh, this was the happiest day of my life!'”

The queen fell pregnant after just three months of marriage. The couple went on to welcome nine children.

Queen Victoria’s ‘crush’ on husband Prince Albert

Williams believed Victoria had so many children simply because she “loved the joys of the marriage bed.”

Historian Dr Lister explained that Victoria wrote about her husband “obsessively.” She mused that she was “head over heels,” for Albert.

So much so, her diary entries were very much like a glimpse into a “teenage girl crush.” Thus confirming Victoria “fancied” her hubby the whole way through their union. How sweet!

Sadly, Albert died when he was just 42 in 1861. His official cause of death was typhoid fever.

A heartbroken Queen Victoria was in mourning until her own death in 1901.
