Kate Middleton made a witty remark about her youngest, Prince Louis, while touring a royal art exhibition as part of the French state visit.

The Prince and Princess of Wales stepped into the spotlight on Tuesday as they joined King Charles and Queen Camilla in welcoming French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron to the UK for the start of their state visit.

While Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis were absent from the formal proceedings, Kate couldn’t resist making a lighthearted reference to her youngest son during the day’s events.

Princess Kate Middleton makes joke about Prince Louis

While touring a display of artwork from the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, Kate was seen admiring a portrait of a young King Louis XIV.

“I should know,” she cheekily quipped, as reported by HELLO!.

The Princess studied History of Art at the University of St Andrews. She appeared to make the comment in playful reference to Prince Louis, seven, whose antics have made him a firm royal fan favourite.

This appearance marked one of Princess Kate’s most prominent public engagements since her cancer diagnosis last year.

Earlier this year, Kate revealed that she was in remission. Since then, she has resumed royal duties gradually. Just last week, she opened up during a visit to Colchester Hospital, revealing that the phase following treatment has been “really, really difficult.”

“You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment,” Kate said. “Treatment’s done, then it’s like, ‘I can crack on, get back to normal’. But actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult.

“You’re not necessarily under the clinical team any longer. But you’re not able to function normally at home as you perhaps once used to.”

Kate Middleton fashion choices made headlines

As always, Kate’s style made headlines. For the official welcome, she wore a soft blush Christian Dior suit jacket and a net skirt. She accessorised with Princess Diana’s iconic pearl drop earrings.

Later in the day, the Princess dazzled at the state banquet in a red Givenchy gown, paired with the Lover’s Knot Tiara, a favourite of both Diana and Catherine.

The most talked-about accessory, however, was the Royal Family Order of King Charles III, a pale blue ribbon featuring a miniature portrait of the King, worn above the badge she received from Queen Elizabeth II.

This was the first time the Princess of Wales has worn King Charles’ personal honour in public.

Prince Louis appearances

Although Prince Louis wasn’t there to witness the French state visit himself, he has already made a number of memorable public appearances in 2025.

Most recently, he stole the spotlight at Trooping the Colour, charming the crowd with his waving and animated expressions.

His cheeky charm was also on full display at the 80th anniversary of VE Day earlier this year.

As he stood beside his family watching the commemorations, Louis playfully mimicked his older brother George’s dramatic hair sweep.

Last year, during the Big Help Out community volunteering event, Louis joined his parents at the 3rd Upton Scouts Hut in Slough. There, he eagerly tried archery, roasted marshmallows, and even drove a digger with help from Prince William.

It was during that event that Kate was overheard using his adorable nickname. “Pop that in the fire, Loubugs,” she told him as he toasted a marshmallow.
