Prince Andrew has been away from the royal spotlight for several years, being stripped of his military patronages and titles, but his nephew Prince Harry mentioned his Jeffrey Epstein scandal in his memoir Spare.

It came after King Charles’ younger brother agreed to a nightmare BBC interview with Emily Maitlis in 2019. While the royal claimed he was no longer in contact with his former friend who became a convicted sex offender, the interview became a media fire The Firm couldn’t extinguish.

The fallout led to the royal stepping down from his public role after Virginia Giuffre filed a cicil lawsuit against him, claiming he sexually assaulted her. Prince Andrew vehemently denied the allegations repeatedly and they settled the lawsuit out of court in 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The prince accepted no liability.

No members of the royal family have commented on Andrew’s scandal with Jeffrey Epstein, but his nephew Prince Harry made a rare reference in his 2023 biography.

Prince Harry’s rare reference to Jeffrey Epstein in his memoir

The Duke of Sussex released his memoir, Spare, in January 2023. He spoke about his time in the military, losing his mother at a young age, and his estranged relationship with his brother Prince William and father King Charles.

He made allegations of being mistreated by members of The Firm, royal aides as well as a physical fight with William over his future wife. However, Buckingham Palace has not released any statement over the book.

One member of the family who many were not expecting to be mentioned, was Andrew.

But the context is likely unexpected.

Prince Harry brought up the Jeffrey Epstein scandal in a conversation with Meghan Markle over their security status.

They discussed the prospect of their state-funded security being removed by the government after stepping down as senior royals in 2020. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex didn’t believe this would happen – but it later did – and Harry explained they thought they’d still receive it after leaving The Firm.

“Meg asked me one night: ‘You don’t think they’d ever pull our security, do you?’

“‘Never. Not in this climate of hate. And not after what happened to my mother.’

Prince Harry went on, referencing the Jeffrey Epstein scandal: “Also, not in the wake of my Uncle Andrew. He was embroiled in a shameful scandal, accused of the sexual assault of a young woman, and no one had so much as suggested that he lose his security. Whatever grievances people had against us, sex crimes weren’t on the list.”

FBI closes case on Prince Andrew

In July 2025, the FBI probe into Jeffrey Epstein was concluded, where investigators revealed there will be no charges brought against the royal.

The bureau said in their report that there was “no evidence” the billionaire “blackmailed powerful figures, kept a ‘client list’ or was murdered.”

Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while in prison after being convicted.

The FBI added no further investigations will be launched “against uncharged third parties”, which includes Prince Andrew.
