Prince William and Kate Middleton could take centre stage in a historic American celebration next year, with a royal expert declaring the couple “perfect” for the role.

The United States will mark 250 years since its Declaration of Independence from Britain in 2026, a milestone anniversary that is already sparking speculation about who will represent the UK on the world stage.

Prince William and Kate Middleton ‘perfect’ for key role

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams believes the Prince and Princess of Wales are the ideal candidates to attend the event.

He described them as “pivotal” figures in Britain’s soft power diplomacy.

“You could argue that King Charles and Queen Camilla might go. That would be momentous, of course,” Fitzwilliams told GB News.

“But if you are looking at the monarchy projecting a more youthful image, which is very important, I would have thought that’s something for William and Kate. I think they would be perfect.”

I think they would be perfect.

Fitzwilliams said the significance of the anniversary, combined with President Donald Trump’s well-known admiration for the royal family, makes an invitation to senior royals highly likely.

“The monarchy is one of Britain’s greatest assets on the world stage. It’s the sort of thing I would expect. I would have thought it would be almost automatic,” he added.

But why William and Kate?

The royal couple’s popularity in the US continues to soar. Prince William was recently ranked the most beloved living royal across the Atlantic.

A Gallup poll in May found that 63% of Americans viewed him favourably, compared to just 10% who held a negative opinion.

Fitzwilliams noted that this makes the Waleses ideal ambassadors at such a high-profile global event.

Donald Trump’s UK state visit

The prediction comes ahead of another key moment in US–UK royal relations: President Trump’s second state visit to Britain, which is scheduled for September 17–19, 2025.

It will mark the first time a modern American president has received two such honours.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will be received by King Charles, with formal events and engagements taking place over three days.

Trump is also expected to visit his mother’s native Scotland later this summer.

However, both the White House and Buckingham Palace agreed to reserve formal royal meetings for the full state occasion in September, due to scheduling issues.

Trump made his first state visit in 2019 and met Queen Elizabeth II and Charles, then the Prince of Wales.

Earlier this year, the president praised King Charles as a “beautiful man” when the state visit invitation was hand-delivered by Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a White House meeting.

Despite the fanfare, Trump’s upcoming visit has sparked backlash.

A Change.org petition urging King Charles to revoke the invite has gained over 50,000 signatures. The petition’s creator argues Trump’s actions clash with British values.

It is one of dozens of online efforts opposing the trip. However, only government-run petitions can trigger official responses or debate.

Nonetheless, public pressure continues to grow as the September visit approaches.
