Princess Margaret's 'damning words' to Sarah Ferguson for 'bringing shame to royal family'
Not all of The Firm were believed to be Fergie fans
Sarah Ferguson was accused of discrediting the royal family by Princess Margaret, it has been alleged.
Sarah, aka Fergie, was married to Princess Margaret’s nephew, Prince Andrew, from 1986 until they divorced in 1996. Despite their split, the former couple have stayed close, and both reside at Royal Lodge in Windosr.
Speculation has also suggested that Prince Andrew and Fergie, who share daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie together, could remarry. Prince Andrew said previously: “I don’t rule remarriage out and I certainly don’t rule it in. If ever the opportunity arose, I do not know what I would do, as it is not in the plan.”
However, such a move may not have been welcomed by some senior members of the royal family, including the late Queen Elizabeth II’s sister and husband.

What happened with Sarah Ferguson and the royal family?
Fergie is often said to have had a fond relationship with her former mother-in-law. Indeed, following the previous monarch’s death in September 2022, Sarah Ferguson revealed the final words the late monarch told her: “Sarah, remember that yourself is good enough.”
Additionally, Fergie reportedly reflected: “She knew me all my life and she loved me.”
Prince Philip was not thought to be as much of a fan, though – and she reportedly didn’t receive an invite to his funeral in 2021. However, Covid-19 restrictions were also in place at the time.
Royal author Jane Dismore has previously addressed the relationship between Fergie and her father-in-law on the podcast The Firm: Blood, Lies and Royal Succession. She claimed Prince Philip disliked Sarah even before she married his son.
Jane said: “She’s the one person that Prince Philip would not have anything to do with. He didn’t like Fergie – she knew that she wasn’t welcome when Prince Philip was around.”

What Princess Margaret ‘said’ about Sarah Ferguson
Allegations concerning Fergie’s behaviour – particularly in regards to her spending and reported “wastefulness” – have recently emerged in a serialisation of Andrew Lownie’s explosive new royal biography, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York.
But as well as her finances, allegations about her conduct at social functions are also focused upon.
An unnamed friend reportedly claimed in the book: “She tells dirty jokes. I have seen her among a group of people she had never met before doing the fake orgasm sketch from When Harry Met Sally. The following morning, she will ring around seeking reassurance that she had not made an ass of herself.”
And it is Princess Margaret’s reported corrosive assessment of her niece by marriage that is positioned as giving insight into the alleged perception of Fergie as a “hugely diminished figure”.

Amid the claims Fergie “partied, […] took lovers, […] was indiscreet”, it is suggested these alleged matters caused Princess Margaret to tell her: “You have done more to bring shame on the royal family than could ever have been imagined. Clearly you have never considered the damage you are doing us all. How dare you discredit us?”
