The royal family's A-level results from King Charles and Prince William to Harry

How they did in their exams

Thousands of students across the UK could be receiving life-changing news today as they find out their A-level results, but have you ever wondered how the likes of King Charles, Prince William, and other members of the royal family did in their exams?

No royals were awaiting their A-level grades this year. The last time a member of the royal family sat their A-level exams was in 2022, when Lady Louise Windsor picked up her results. However, while the results of her A-level studies in English, History, Politics, and Drama were confirmed, the exact grades were not released. However, she is currently studying English at the University of St Andrews, and it is believed that the entry requirements to do so are AAA at A-level. Furthermore, it had previously been communicated following her GCSEs that Lady Louise’s grades were a private matter.

That reasoning has also applied to other regal relatives – but not all of them. Here’s how other royals have fared with their A-levels over the years.

Did King Charles pass his A-levels?

A-levels were introduced in 1951, and so King Charles will have been the first senior royal of his generation to take them.

Schooled at Gordonstoun in Scotland like his father, the then-Prince Charles gained five O-levels (what GCSEs were formerly known as) and two A levels.

He achieved a B in History and a C in French. He then read History at university in Cambridge, graduating with a 2:2. Charles had studied Archaeology and Anthropology in his first year and then History for two years.

Princess Anne, meanwhile, was the first British female royal to attend school. She took six O-levels at Benenden School in Kent. And she also picked up three A-levels in English, History, and Politics. However, her grades have never been announced.

Prince Andrew was also educated at Gordonstoun, like his brother.  He also left school with six O-levels and A-levels in English, History, and Politics.

And Prince Edward also attended Gordonstoun. However, he passed nine O-levels and was successful with three A-levels. He got a C in English, a D in History, and a D in Politics. He went on to study History at Cambridge like his eldest brother, also getting a 2:2 degree.

What did Prince William get in his A levels?

Royal tradition was broken when it came to Prince William‘s schooling – he went to Eton College. He achieved 12 GCSEs and also A-levels in Geography (with an A grade), History of Art (B), and Biology (C). Following a gap year, Prince William went on to study Art History at the University of St Andrews. He and his future wife Kate Middleton would study the same subject until he switched to Geography. He graduated with a 2:1.

His brother Prince Harry, meanwhile, achieved 11 GCSEs and took two A-levels at Eton, gaining a B in Art and a D in Geography.

When it comes to their cousins, both Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie did well with their studies.

Princess Beatrice achieved nine GCSEs, including two A*s, and also gained an A in Drama and Bs in History and Film Studies in her three A-levels. She went on to Goldsmiths university to read History and History of Ideas, graduating with a 2:1.

And Princess Eugenie bagged two A*s, four As, and three Bs in her GCSEs. Her A-level results included As in Art and English Literature, and a B in History of Art. She later graduated with a 2:1 Combined Honours BA in English Literature, History of Art, and Politics from Newcastle University.

Like her future husband, she also took a gap year, and was in the same year and read the same subject at St Andrews as Prince William before he changed to Geography.

Kate graduated in 2005 with a 2:1 in History of Art.
