Princess Anne once shared a stark warning to younger members of the royal family, which could include Princes William and Harry.

The Princess Royal, who turns 75 on August 15, speaking in 2020, warned the younger generation of royals about “reinventing the wheel”.

Back in 2020, Anne spoke to Vanity Fair about how attempts to refine and modernise royal behaviour have already been tried and tested. In the interview, Anne spoke out about making big changes to how things work within the monarchy.

“I don’t think this younger generation probably understands what I was doing in the past, and it’s often true, isn’t it?” she said.

“You don’t necessarily look at the previous generations and say, ‘Oh, you did that? Or, you went there?’” she then continued.

“And I’m already at the stage, ‘Please do not reinvent that particular wheel.’ We’ve been there, done that; some of these things don’t work. You may need to go back to basics.”

Though the targets of her comments haven’t ever been confirmed, it has been speculated that she was taking aim at Harry and William.

Harry, of course, quit life as a working royal in 2020, whilst William is reportedly in agreement with his father’s views about streamlining and modernising the monarchy.

Princess Anne ‘annoyed’ with Prince William

In more recent news, reports claimed that Anne felt “annoyed” by Prince William‘s behaviour in relation to Windsor Castle.

According to The Sunday Times, the Princess Royal reportedly felt unhappy that her nephew has taken on fewer investiture ceremonies than her at Windsor Castle.

This is despite William, Kate, and the kids living nearby in Adelaide Cottage. Anne, meanwhile, lives a 90-minute drive away at Gatcombe Park Estate in Gloucestershire.

Investitures are the ceremonies where honours and awards are formally presented to those named in the king’s Birthday Honours list. They represent a significant part of royal life.

“She’s still doing most of the investitures [at Windsor] even though William lives there. It annoys her,” a source claimed.

However, despite this, Princess Anne reportedly has a strong bond with Prince William. They are regularly seen supporting each other at various royal events.

When Anne returned to work after suffering an injury following a horse accident last year, William and Kate branded her a “super trooper”.

“So great to see you back so soon! W & C x,” they said in a heartfelt message.

During an appearance on Mike Tindall’s The Good, The Bad & The Rugby podcast, Anne spoke about how she would race William at Balmoral when he was a child.

“Running around the square at Balmoral, I was really good at that, I did corners really well,” she said.
