Princess Diana claimed that her sons always had each other “for a reason,” a royal biographer revealed.

Princes William and Harry have had a strained relationship in recent years, compounded by Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepping back as senior royals in 2020 and moving to California.

The late princess’ biographer, Andrew Morton, has told People that she’d always say they had each other so Harry could support William as they got older.

“Diana always used to say she had two boys for a reason,” he explained. “The younger would be there to support the older in the lonely task as future king.”

Princess Diana would have been ‘peacemaker’ between William and Harry

He added: “There is no doubt Diana would have tried to act as a peacemaker between them. If she had been around, they would have worked things out in a different way.”

William, 43, and Harry, 40, grew up in the public eye as young royals, navigating the divorce of their parents, and then losing Diana in 1997 when they were 15 and 12 respectively.

Morton, whose latest book, Winston and the Windsors, comes out in October, also discussed the foundations of the brothers’ estrangement, which became public when Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior royals in 2020.

“Things were said that sparked the initial rift, and it’s never healed,” he added to People

The younger would be there to support the older in the lonely task as future king.

However, the first rumours of a rift were sparked in 2018, with reports that Harry wasn’t happy with the effort his brother made to help Meghan feel welcomed into the family.

Meanwhile, a 2019 documentary claimed that, in 2016, William had expressed some concern about how fast his brother’s relationship with American actress Meghan was moving, leaving Harry allegedly “ballistic”.

In his 2023 memoir, Spare, Harry himself alleged a physical altercation between him and William took place in 2019. He claimed it happened after William called Meghan “difficult,” “rude” and “abrasive”.

Despite the reported rift, both brothers have remained committed to honouring their mother, Diana’s legacy. William is passionate about helping homeless people, like his mother, while Harry has followed her in supporting people affected by AIDS in southern Africa. This remains a cause he feels strongly about even after stepping back from the Sentebale charity he co-founded in 2006.

Diana ‘told her sons to make a promise’

In the updated version of Robert Lacey’s book, Battle of Brothers, in 2021, Diana’s psychic and friend Simone Simmons claimed that the late princess made her sons promise they’d stay friends.

She said that Diana told her boys: “You must promise me that you will always be each other’s best friends. And never let anyone come between you.”

According to the book, William and Harry promised “they would keep to that”. They then “high-fived each other and gave their mother a big cuddle”.
