Terence Stamp on Princess Diana friendship

On August 17, Terence’s family issued a sad statement announcing his death.

“He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer, that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come. We ask for privacy at this sad time,” they said.

Terence was best known for his role as General Zod in the 1978 Superman movie and its 1980 sequel, Superman II.

He also enjoyed roles in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Haunted Mansion, Last Night in Soho, and His Dark Materials.

She was a lot of fun – we used to have lunch at San Lorenzo, and her company was heaven.

In a 2012 interview with the Daily Mail, as part of their Definitive Article interview series, Terence opened up about his platonic relationship with Princess Diana.

The subject was raised when Terence was asked which misapprehension of himself he wished to erase.

“We were just really good chums, yet I still get asked questions alluding to something more,” he said of Diana.

“She was a lot of fun – we used to have lunch at San Lorenzo, and her company was heaven,” he then continued.

‘We got on amazingly well’

In another interview, Terence went into some more detail about his close bond with the royal.

“The relationship came about because my friend Oliver Hoare, the art dealer, knew her. I said, ‘I’d love to have a proper chat with her, why don’t you ask her if she’s up for it?’ He asked and she said yes. We got on amazingly well,” he said, as reported by the Express in 2017.

He then went on to speak about how they kept their relationship platonic.

Terence said: “It wasn’t like that. I thought that was the last thing she needed really. She just wanted somebody to talk to that was a guy, who would give her objective opinions. And because of that we just kind of opened up to each other. I saw the sadness in her because… she was a believer in the marriage and all that. And it didn’t turn out the way she expected it to.”

Terence and Diana’s friendship

Terence and Diana got on so well that sometimes she’d come round to his house for dinner.

The actor recalled even cooking for the princess, making her mushroom risotto and decorating the meal with the letters HRH in truffle paste.

He added that their friendship wasn’t a “formal thing”, and that they’d just meet up for “an hour” for tea or a chat.

Terence then added that the time he spent with the princess was a “good time”.
