King Charles 'lets his guard down' during Balmoral arrival where he 'truly feels at home'
The king arrived at the royal estate on Monday
King Charles appeared to let his guard down when he arrived at Balmoral on Monday (August 18), a body language expert has claimed.
Speaking on behalf of Betfair Slots, Darren Stanton said that the king, 76, showed signs of “elation and joy,” including unguarded smiles, softened facial muscles, and relaxed shoulders as he arrived at the Scottish residence.
Images of the king’s arrival appeared on the royal family’s official social media pages on Monday.
“What stands out immediately is how relaxed and genuinely happy he looks at Balmoral,” he said. “This is the place where he grew up, where so many of his happiest memories with his parents were formed; and that emotional connection comes through very clearly in his body language.

King Charles ‘elated’ over Balmoral arrival
“In these images, you can see signs of elation and joy. His expressions are unguarded, his face opens up with authentic smiles. The muscles in his face soften, his eyes crease naturally, and his whole demeanour radiates comfort.”
Darren explained that Charles’ posture loosens in the way that it doesn’t when he’s undertaking more formal royal duties. Meanwhile, he also makes more fluid rather than controlled movements.
“These are all non-verbal cues that tell us this is where he truly feels at home,” he added. “Balmoral isn’t just a royal residence to him; it’s the setting tied to his formative experiences of walking, hunting, and family life. So the body language here makes it very clear: this is Charles at his most authentic and content.”
Royal family’s Balmoral tradition
The estate Balmoral Castle lies on, located in Aberdeenshire, was bought by Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert from the Farquharson family in 1852.
Victoria described Balmoral as “my dear paradise in the highlands”. It’s been warmly thought of by royals ever since, with the king often spending late summer there. Charles tends to stay at Birkhill, his private home within the estate, rather than at the castle itself.
He inherited it from the Queen Mother after she died in 2002. He then spent his honeymoon with Queen Camilla there in 2005.
Balmoral isn’t part of the Crown Estate, instead being the private property of the monarch. Famously, it was the summer residence of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died there on September 8, 2022.
The royal family’s Instagram account announced yesterday that the king had arrived and was “welcomed by a Guard of Honour”.

Charles ‘invited’ Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson to stay with him
In a surprise move, Charles welcomed Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, to join him at Balmoral this year.
Reports claim that Charles’ younger brother Andrew and Sarah will stay at Carigowan Lodge, a seven-bedroom property within the estate.
It comes just days after the release of Andrew Lownie’s biography, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, and the Channel 5 documentary, Andrew & Fergie: The Duke and Duchess of Excess, both of which have seen Andrew embroiled in more controversy.
“The Balmoral invitation is a huge show of support,” a royal source told The Sun.
Who will join Charles at Balmoral?
Their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will reportedly join them alongside their children. According to reports, Beatrice’s stepson Christopher ‘Wolfie’ Woolf will join the family. Wolfie is the nine-year-old son of Beatrice’s husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
Meanwhile Prince William, Princess Kate, and their children and Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, may also arrive at Balmoral soon.
