Former royal butler’s warning to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle over Netflix deal

After the release of their docuseries in 2022, it became clear that Prince Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the royal family is strained.

Prince Harry admitted to the rift within the family himself, both in his memoir Spare and in interviews.

The shows they have released through the platform have made a significant impact, sparking both intrigue and controversy. Their Netflix deal, signed in 2020, was reported to be around $100 million, allowing their production company, Archewell Productions, to develop documentaries and other content. While some projects were praised for their insights and entertainment value, others were critiqued by both the media and royal observers.

Grant Harrold, a former royal butler who served King Charles for seven years, shares his concerns about the extension of the deal.

Harrold acknowledged their success but warned that while Prince Harry and Meghan are entitled to pursue their projects, they need to carefully consider the type of content being developed for their shows and documentaries.

He stressed that any work seen as critical of the royal family could fuel public controversy and ‘impact any ongoing attempts to build bridges.’.

“Their biggest concern will be another tell-all documentary on their fallouts with the family”, Harrold stated. He highlighted the fine line between personal storytelling and potential reputational risk.

The stakes of the Netflix extension

The renewed partnership reportedly grants Netflix a ‘first-look’ option on the Sussexes’ future projects. Although the ongoing collaboration secures their work with a major streaming service, it also places the couple under scrutiny.

Commentators suggested that the extension may be more cautious than the original deal, reflecting awareness of past controversies.

Public reaction has been mixed. Many viewers are eager for new content from the royals, while others question the timing and tone of the couple’s projects.

As the second season of With Love, Meghan unfolds, all eyes remain on Prince Harry and Meghan to see whether they can balance their creativity with the sensitivities associated with The Firm.
