Princess Diana reportedly considered moving to America, and hoped she would one day with Prince William and Harry – but it never happened.

It’s said the Princess of Wales was making plans to initiate the big move after her divorce from the then Prince Charles. It’s claimed the royal wanted her sons included in her long-term plans.

Paul Burrell, Princess Diana‘s former butler, said the details of her plans were found on her desk after she died in August 1997.

Princess Diana had ‘plans for Harry and William’ to live in America

Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell claimed his employer was past the planning stage of buying a home outside of the UK and actually doing so.

It seems Diana may have been looking to live in Malibu, the part of Los Angeles which is just an hour’s drive from where Harry and Meghan reside in Montecito.

He reportedly said at the time: “Diana was also deciding to spend some of her time in America. In fact, the day she died, on her desk were plans of a home in Malibu in California, which she was in the process of purchasing.”

Additionally, it seems Diana had specific reasons for exposing her boys to different aspects of life beyond the royal family.

Mr Burrell added: “She was going to take William and Harry for three, four weeks every year to America to give them a different culture, to give them a different insight into life.”

Heartbreaking reason she never made the move

Richard Kay, one of Diana’s friends, told the Daily Mail’s Royal Confidential, that the princess never made the move to America despite having dreams of relocating.

He added that the royal “loved” the United States and hoped she’d live there one day.

He said: “She talked about it right at the very end of her life to me, about settling for a time in the US.

“She loved the US I think that if she could, she would have moved there and lived there.”

However, as William was 15 and Harry 12, he believes Diana felt they were too young to consider the move.

Kay continued: “I don’t think she had quite worked out how she could live in New York or California, for example, and maintain that close contact that she needed to have with William and Harry. As they got older, that might have changed and I could see her living there.”

He explained the Princess of Wales felt she would be ‘freer’ somehow in the country, and would have admired her son Harry’s decision to settle in California with wife Meghan Markle.
