As the autumn term begins and Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis return to school, Kate Middleton is once again balancing her royal duties with being a hands-on mum.

The Princess of Wales, 43, is known for prioritising her children’s wellbeing. However, she has openly admitted that juggling motherhood and work can come with challenges, especially when it comes to the school run.

Kate Middleton on dropping Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis at school

On Giovanna Fletcher’s Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast in 2020, Kate opened up about the internal conflict so many working mothers face.

When asked if she suffers from “mum guilt”, Kate said: “Yes, absolutely.”

“Anyone who doesn’t [feel mum guilt] as a mother is actually lying,” she said.

She recalled a specific moment that tugged at her heart. “Even this morning, George and Charlotte were like, ‘Mummy, how could you possibly not be dropping us off at school this morning?’ No, it’s a constant challenge.”

Despite her royal status, the princess shares the same daily pressures as millions of parents, striving to be present while managing a full workload.

Both she and Prince William are frequently spotted doing school drop-offs and pick-ups when their schedules allow. However, their duties as full-time working royals mean it’s not always possible.

Fortunately, help may come from nearby. Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, live close to the Wales family’s current home, Adelaide Cottage. They may step in when needed, a support system the princess clearly values.

“The more people you have around your children who are safe and loving and caring, the better,” Kate explained on the podcast. She credited this wisdom to “a very wise man”.

‘We all have bad days’

Kate said the advice helped lift a “real weight” off her shoulders, realising it wasn’t solely her responsibility to “do everything”.

She said: “You know, we all have good days, bad days. You can dilute that with others who aren’t on that particular day struggling.”

With public engagements set to ramp up now that the children are back in school, the princess’ careful balancing act is likely to continue.

Even this morning, George and Charlotte were like, ‘Mummy, how could you possibly not be dropping us off at school this morning?’

Her role as a senior royal has grown in recent years, and maintaining stability for her family remains a priority.

Later this year, the Waleses are expected to make a major move. A Kensington Palace spokesperson recently confirmed that the family will be relocating to their long-term “forever home” – Forest Lodge in Windsor.

The private residence is close to Lambrook School, Windsor Castle, and the Middleton family home.

Meanwhile, after a summer prioritising family, Kate and William will return to royal duties this week.

The couple will kick off their return from summer break with a joint visit to London’s Natural History Museum on September 4.

Kensington Palace confirmed the couple will explore the museum’s redeveloped gardens to learn how young people are using technology to promote biodiversity in urban areas.

They’ll join a pond-dipping session with pupils from Lewisham and meet students from Manchester working to green their school grounds.

The visit likely marks the start of a busy autumn schedule now that George, Charlotte, and Louis are back in school.
