King Charles allegedly once “threw a book” at Paul Burrell, the former royal butler claims in his new book, The Royal Insider.

In an excerpt published in the Daily Mail, Paul recalls the incident, alleging that he was “summoned to the library” for a meeting with the now-king after Paul had told Princess Diana that Charles wasn’t at home.

He claims that Charles asked him if he had spoken with Diana the previous night, to which Paul explained that she called him at 10pm and wanted to speak with Charles.

However, Paul says that he told the then-Prince of Wales: “I couldn’t find you as you must have been out.”

He claims that Charles asked him why he told Diana that he was out and why Paul didn’t “just say that you couldn’t find me?”.

“Are you asking me to lie for you?” Paul says he asked the royal, with Charles allegedly replying: “Yes, I am. Yes, I bloody am,” before he “banged the desk with his fists”.

Charles then said, according to Paul: “I will be king of this country one day and you WILL do as I say.”

Paul alleges that Charles then “picked up a book from his desk and threw it towards me” as he screamed “Get out! Get out!”.

Paul also claims that many of the royal staff didn’t realise how “bad” relations were between Charles and Diana, describing it as a “war zone”. The former butler describes Diana as a “city girl” who didn’t enjoy activities like hunting and horse riding.

The former butler also recalls the alleged moment Diana told him of Charles’ words after their younger son Prince Harry was born in 1984.

I will be king of this country one day and you WILL do as I say.

According to Paul: “Charles came into the hospital room, looked in the cot and said: ‘Oh, red hair.’ Diana replied: ‘But Charles, you know that’s the Spencer gene, we all have red hair.’ Then came the damning blow. He said: ‘Well at least I’ve got my heir and spare now and I can return to Camilla.'”

“She told me: ‘I cried myself to sleep that night knowing that my marriage was over.'”

Paul opened up to Princes William and Harry

Paul says that he told Prince William and Harry of this moment in 2017, when he saw them at Diana’s old Kensington Palace apartments.

“They asked me when and where I thought it had gone wrong with their parents. And I said I thought it was at that moment,” he writes. “Harry stared straight at me, poker-faced. He couldn’t believe what I was telling him. I was in tears, but he never flinched. I remember this moment distinctly because it looked like he was bearing his mother’s pain.”

Elsewhere in his book, Paul speaks highly of the late Queen Elizabeth II, however, explaining that he didn’t have any drama of the sort when working with her.

He shared that she and Prince Philip reportedly gave Diana support when her marriage to Charles was struggling.

Paul claims that Philip “wrote to the princess and said that neither he nor the Queen could understand why Charles would prefer Camilla over her”.
