Princess Kate’s battle with hyperemesis gravidarum

In February 2020, almost two years on from Prince Louis‘ birth in April 2018, Kate sat down for a chat with podcaster Giovanna Fletcher about motherhood.

Speaking on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast, Kate opened up about her battle with hyperemesis gravidarum.

Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is extreme morning sickness and causes you to vomit several times per day during pregnancy. The condition often needs hospital treatment. It’s thought that between 1-3 out of every 100 women suffer from HG during pregnancy, according to the NHS website.

Kate was hospitalised after suffering from HG in 2012, during her pregnancy with her first child, Prince George.

Speaking to Giovanna about the condition, Kate admitted it made her “not the happiest of pregnant people”.

“It was fine. I got very bad morning sickness, so I’m not the happiest of pregnant people,” she said of the pregnancy.

‘William didn’t feel he could do much to help’

When asked if she’d had it “every time”, Kate replied: “Yes, unfortunately. Lots of people have it far, far worse, but it was definitely a challenge.

“Not just for me but also for your loved ones around you – and I think that’s the thing – being pregnant and having a newborn baby and things like that, impacts everybody in the family.”

“You know, William didn’t feel he could do much to help and it’s hard for everyone to see you suffering without actually being able to do anything about it,” she then said.

How did Kate Middleton cope with hyperemesis gravidarum?

Describing the condition as “utterly rotten”, she then said: “I was really sick – I wasn’t eating the things I should be eating – but yet, the body was still able to take all the goodness from my body and to grow new life, which I think is fascinating.”

The princess then said that after trying everything to manage the condition, she tried hypnobirthing techniques of mindfulness and meditation. It was by trying these techniques that she realised the importance of “mind over body”.

“I’m not going to say that William was standing there sort of, chanting sweet nothings at me,” she said.

“He definitely wasn’t. I didn’t even ask him about it, but it was just something I wanted to do for myself.”

“I saw the power of it really, the meditation and the deep breathing and things like that, that they teach you in hypnobirthing, when I was really sick, and actually I realised that this was something I could take control of, I suppose, during labour. It was hugely powerful,” she then added.
