Donald Trump has gushed over his “friend” King Charles as he prepared to travel to the UK for his second state visit.

The US President, 79, will travel to Britain with his wife, First Lady Melania, on Tuesday (September 16) for a string of engagements with the royal family, starting on Wednesday.

The Trumps will stay at Windsor Castle and will embark on a series of visits and engagements across the two-day state visit.

Before jetting off to the UK, the president spoke with reporters about his bond with King Charles and Queen Camilla. But he accidentally suffered an awkward blunder when it came to Charles’ royal title.

Donald Trump gushes over ‘gentleman’ King Charles ahead of UK state visit

Speaking to ITV News, Trump said: “[King Charles and Queen Camilla] are friends of mine for a long time, long before he was king.

“It’s an honour to have him as king. I think he represents the country so well. He’s such an elegant gentleman.”

Trump continued, detailing his “unprecedented” second state visit: “My relationship is very good with the UK and Charles, who’s now king, is my friend. It’s the first time this has ever happened where somebody was honoured twice. So it’s a great honour.”

Traditionally, presidents are not offered another state visit during their second term. Instead, they’re usually invited for lunch or tea with the monarch.

‘Prince Charles’ blunder

Trump also gushed over getting to stay at Windsor, as Buckingham Palace continues to undergo renovations.

He said: “They’ve never used Windsor Castle for this before. They use Buckingham Palace. And I don’t want to say one’s better than the other, but they say Windsor Castle is the ultimate, right? So it’s going to be nice.”

Trump then made an unfortunate blunder as he referred to the king as “Prince Charles”.

He said: “Primarily it’s to be with Prince Charles and Camilla.”

Fans quickly shared their thoughts underneath ITV News’ TikTok video of Trump’s comments. One person wrote: “‘Prince Charles’,” followed by a crying face emoji.

Another replied: “Very unprofessional.”

A third added: “Prince Charles,” followed by a laughing face emoji.

Someone else defended the president, writing: “He’s known him as prince for his entire life, so have my parents who still slip up and call him prince.”
