During his time there, Harry met with Ukraine’s Minister for Veterans Affairs, Natalia Kalmykova, to discuss ways his Invictus Games Foundation can “enhance support for wounded, injured, and sick serving personnel and veterans returning home with life-changing injuries”.
He also paid his personal respects to fallen victims of the war, as well as having some touching interactions with those who had lost loved ones to the conflict.
It was the duke’s second time in the country this year, but his first in the capital of Kyiv. Back in April, he travelled to Lviv to meet with war victims and veterans.
During his most recent trip, Harry visited a flower and flag memorial in Kyiv’s Maidan Square. He laid a wreath to those who had lost their lives in the war.
The experience appeared to have a profound effect on Harry. He looked visibly emotional as he declared it “the most insanely sad yet beautiful thing”.

‘The duke gave her a big hug’
Josh Boggi, the international community manager for Prince Harry’s Invictus Games Foundation, also joined him on the trip to Ukraine.
According to PEOPLE, he has described the powerful moment that he saw Harry come face to face with war veterans and their families.
The duke gave her a big hug. There was a lot of emotion.
“You could feel the aura in the room when he walked in,” Boggi recalled, adding: “He was hugging the veterans, and they were hugging him back. He was in his absolute element in that room.”
He claimed that Prince Harry was “adored”. Not only by the people of Ukraine, but across all of the Invictus nations around the world and throughout the entire military family.
Boggi also shared a particularly moving interaction that took place between Prince Harry and the mother of a former Invictus Games captain, who has since lost his life in the conflict.
“The duke gave her a big hug,” he recounted. “There was a lot of emotion.”
Overall, Boggi concluded: “The big takeaway for me was seeing these guys and girls who have been through hell and back and living with their injuries and disabilities and seeing the smiles on their faces when the duke walked in. He would try and give time to everyone and see how they are getting on in their recovery journeys.”
