Meghan Markle has faced some backlash over a video from her recent Paris trip, allegedly showing her travelling near the tunnel where Princess Diana got into a car accident.

Meghan attended Paris Fashion Week trip at the weekend. But her latest social media move has been defended by fans after much backlash.

The Duchess of Sussex was branded “insensitive” by some royal commentators and fans online after posting a now-viral video showing her travelling through Paris in a limousine with her feet up.

Reports claimed she was near the Pont de l’Alma tunnel, the site of Princess Diana’s fatal 1997 crash.

However, her exact location has sparked debate online.

Meghan Markle criticised for video taken in Paris

The video was uploaded to Meghan’s Instagram story. Captured seemingly from her perspective, it showed her legs crossed, resting on the interior of a luxury car as it cruised past notable bridges, reportedly including Pont Alexandre III and Pont des Invalides.

Although Pont de l’Alma, where Princess Diana, Dodi Fayed, and driver Henri Paul lost their lives, wasn’t directly visible, the proximity sparked criticism online.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams led the charge. He called the move “utterly bewildering” and questioned how the clip ever made it to Meghan’s social media.

I don’t understand what on earth she was thinking. Well, she can’t have been thinking. No adviser would ever advise doing something so strange,” Mr Fitzwilliams told the Daily Mail.

“She has every right to go to fashion events. But to share a video which had any connections with the tragic death of the Princess of Wales defies belief. I’m sure she didn’t mean to cause offence; she can’t have been thinking, but it’s insensitive beyond belief. It’s a complete absence of thought.”

Some other royal fans agreed online, calling the post “insensitive” and “disrespectful”.

Fans defend Meghan

Despite the criticism, many fans rallied behind Meghan online. They branded the backlash “ridiculous” and accused critics of grasping at straws.

“So no one can ever do anything near that bridge? Y’all are crazy,” one commenter wrote.

“People are being ridiculous! She is a movie star, for cripes’ sake. Princess Diana does not own the tunnel. Tragic, yes, but all those types of roads and tunnels look alike, not malicious,” another said.

“What has this woman done to deserve these years of vitriol?” a third questioned, pointing out the constant public scrutiny Meghan has faced since joining the royal family.

Someone else wrote: “Meghan has every right to 1) enjoy Paris 2) post her adventures on social media just like everyone else.”

Others pointed out factual inaccuracies in the outrage.

“Nowhere near the same tunnel or bridge. Do some actual research,” one post read.

“Not true. Different bridge,” said another.

Meghan Markle attends Paris Fashion Week

The controversy came just hours after Meghan made a surprise appearance at Paris Fashion Week.

Attending Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 2026 show, the duchess stunned in a custom all-white ensemble featuring a dramatic oversized cape, crisp button-down shirt, and tailored trousers.

During the show, she met with her friend Pierpaolo Piccioli, who recently became Balenciaga’s creative director.

Following the runway show, Meghan mingled with notable guests including Anna Wintour, Anne Hathaway, and Baz Luhrmann.

Later in the evening, she changed into a black Balenciaga ankle-length dress with a matching cape for a private dinner event.
