Prince Harry’s financial situation

In short, no, he doesn’t.

According to the official Sussex website, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle receive nothing from the Sovereign Grant – the payment that is paid annually to the monarch by the government in order to fund official duties.

Written in 2020 after they announced they would be stepping back from royal work, the website explained how the Sussexes would not receive money from the royals going forward.

“n 2020, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made the choice to transition into a new working model. As they step back as senior members of the Royal Family and no longer receive funding through the Sovereign Grant, they will become members of the Royal Family with financial independence which is something they look forward to,” it read.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex take great pride in their work and are committed to continuing their charitable endeavours as well as establishing new ones. In addition, they value the ability to earn a professional income, which in the current structure, they are prohibited from doing. For this reason they have made the choice to become members of the Royal Family with financial independence.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s multi-million pound deals

Harry and Meghan have been earning their own money for the last five years, it’s believed.

In 2020, the couple signed a reported £15.6m ($20m) deal with Spotify. During their partnership with the company, Meghan released just 12 episodes of her podcast, Archetypes.

Spotify ended the deal in 2023.

The Sussexes also signed a deal with Netflix in 2020. This deal, worth a reported $100m (£80m), has been far more fruitful for the couple (and for Netflix). Since 2020, they have produced a six-part documentary about their time in the royal family, Meghan has fronted two series of her lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, and Harry has produced documentaries on Polo and the Invictus Games.

Book deals

In 2021, Meghan released a children’s book, The Bench, inspired by a Father’s Day poem she wrote for Harry. She reportedly landed a $700,000 (around £530k) advance.

In 2023, Harry’s autobiography, Spare, was released. He reportedly received a $20 million (around £15m) advance for it.

A Clarence House spokesperson told the BBC that Harry and Meghan stopped receiving funding in the summer of 2020. According to the spokesperson, the couple received a “substantial sum” from the king to make their transition to working life easier.

Relying on inheritance money

In his Oprah interview in 2021, Harry revealed that he’d also been relying on money left behind by his mother.

“I’ve got what my mum left me and without that, we wouldn’t have been able to do this,” he said.

“She saw it coming, and I certainly felt her presence throughout this whole process.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have a reported net worth of $60m (around £46m) as of 2025.
