King Charles appeared to fight back tears on Sunday, as he and other senior members of the royal family paid their respects at the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London.

The monarch laid a wreath at the memorial site and led the two-minute silence to remember those who died in conflict.

‘King Charles looks very emotional’

The Prince of Wales and the Duke of Edinburgh joined King Charles at the Cenotaph, a war memorial on Whitehall in London.

Queen Camilla, Princess Kate, the Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke of Kent and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were also present, supporting from the balcony.

As photos of the solemn occasion were shared on social media, many royal fans were struck by how emotional the king, 76, looked.

“Close-ups of His Majesty showed his eyes welling up with tears. An emotional moment for him no doubt,” one person commented.

“King Charles looks very emotional,” somebody else agreed.

A third X user likewise said: “King Charles looked so devastatingly sad.”

Speaking to the Express, body language expert Judi James attempted to shed some light on the true feelings behind the king’s emotional response.

“His eyes looked red-rimmed despite the relatively mild weather, and they appeared to glisten with tears throughout,” she observed. “His expression appeared reflective, but his features moved about to suggest suppressed emotions. He seemed to be swallowing heavily and his mouth moved a lot as he looked up at the Cenotaph.”

The expert continued: “King Charles, standing looking more solitary than usual, was conspicuously backed up by a severely diminished royal family line-up, with Princess Anne missing and of course Andrew absent. As a result of this, and obviously the occasion itself, he appeared to be in a rather emotional state here.”

She went on to note that Queen Camilla had given her emotional husband a reassuring “well done” smile from the balcony.

Why Princess Anne didn’t attend Remembrance service

Indeed, Prince Edward was the only one of King Charles’ siblings to join him on Remembrance Sunday.

His sister Anne, Princess Royal, was unable to attend as she is currently in Australia with her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence. Their royal tour marks the centenary of the Royal Australian Corps of Signals, of which Princess Anne is Colonel-in-Chief.

Meanwhile, their brother Andrew Mountbatten Windsor has not been seen out publicly since being formally stripped of his royal titles. Buckingham Palace announced last month that King Charles had “initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew”.

It came amid much scrutiny surrounding Andrew over his association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as well as sexual assault allegations against him.

Andrew has always vehemently denied all allegations against him.
