Queen Elizabeth II's 'anger' over Meghan Markle's expensive Dior gown during Morocco visit

The late Queen Elizabeth II was reportedly left angered when Meghan Markle wore an extravagant Dior gown during an official 2019 visit to Morocco.
According to royal biographer Robert Jobson, the monarch was quietly annoyed when she saw press coverage of the kaftan-inspired couture look, which reportedly cost £60k.
Jobson addressed the alleged clash in his new book, The Windsor Legacy: A Royal Dynasty Of Secrets, Scandal And Survival.

Queen Elizabeth’s ‘anger’ over Meghan Markle’s Dior gown
“Certainly, the estimated £60,000 price tag for the Dior dress drew the Queen’s ire when she read about it in the press,” Jobson claimed, as reported by the Daily Mail. “She later let Meghan know that such an expensive outfit was an ill-judged choice.”
The queen famously used ration coupons to pay for her wedding dress in 1947 and regularly recycled outfits for decades. She reportedly saw Meghan’s wardrobe choice as tone-deaf.
Insiders suggest the monarch felt that spending so much money on clothing went against her values of a hardworking royal family.
And it wasn’t an isolated incident. Meghan continued to appear in custom and high-end designer ensembles throughout her time as a working royal.
According to Jobson, this habit continued to cause tension behind palace walls.
But it wasn’t just fashion that stirred the queen’s frustration, allegedly.
Tensions further escalated when Harry and Meghan named their second child Lilibet, a personal nickname used by the queen’s family for her since childhood.
According to Jobson, the queen only learned of the name from news reports. As a result, she allegedly “threw the paper to the floor, startling the staff”.
However, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have long insisted that the queen was informed beforehand.
“The duke spoke with his family in advance,” a spokesperson said at the time. “His grandmother was the first family member he called. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.”

Meghan and Harry ‘snubbed’ in Queen Elizabeth’s Christmas Day speech
Meanwhile, a resurfaced incident has once again cast a spotlight on the relationship between Queen Elizabeth II and Meghan.
During the queen’s 2019 Christmas broadcast, eagle-eyed viewers noticed a notable absence. A framed photo of Prince Harry and Meghan was missing from the display beside Her Majesty.
Instead, the queen showcased images of Prince William and Kate with their children, the then-Prince Charles and Camilla, Prince Philip, and even a vintage black-and-white portrait of her father, King George VI.
Despite rumours about the queen and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex has consistently spoken with affection and respect for the late monarch.
In her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan gushed over the queen’s behaviour towards her.
“The queen has always been wonderful to me,” she clarified. “She’s always been warm and inviting and really welcoming.”
Following Queen Elizabeth’s death in September 2022, Meghan paid tribute once more. The duchess described her as “the most shining example” of female leadership.
