Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly adapting a fan-favourite romcom book, The Wedding Date, into their next Netflix hit.

According to reports, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are set to produce a film adaptation of The Wedding Date, a 2018 novel by New York Times bestselling author Jasmine Guillory.

The charming romcom, which will follow two strangers who agree to be fake dates to a wedding after getting stuck in an elevator, is apparently the latest project under the royal couple’s Archewell Productions banner.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new Netflix project

As reported by Deadline, the film will be adapted by Tracy Oliver, the screenwriter behind Girls Trip and The Blackening.

Oliver made history in 2017 as the first black woman to write a film that grossed over $100 million at the global box office with her movie, Girls Trip.

The latest project also reunites the Sussexes with producer Tracy Ryerson and builds on their growing slate of scripted and unscripted content with Netflix.

The Wedding Date novel was originally published in 2018. It is the first in Guillory’s six-book romance series and quickly became a fan favourite.

The story centres on Alexa Monroe and Drew Nichols, strangers who meet in a broken elevator and decide, on a whim, to attend a wedding together.

“A groomsman and his last-minute guest are about to discover if a fake date can go the distance,” the novel’s official logline teases.

This marks yet another high-profile creative endeavour for Meghan, 44, and Harry, 41.

Just last week, they announced another documentary: Cookie Queens, set to premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

The film is executive-produced by the duke and duchess. It tells the coming-of-age story of four Girl Scouts during the annual cookie-selling season.

This is a personal project for Meghan, who was once a Girl Scout herself. Her mother, Doria Ragland, served as her troop leader.

Harry and Meghan’s Netflix deal

The Wedding Date announcement follows news that Harry and Meghan had renewed their creative partnership with Netflix under a new multi-year first-look deal. This means Netflix gets a first option on proposals from Prince Harry and Meghan’s Archewell production company.

Their new extension also includes new projects tied to Meghan’s As Ever lifestyle brand.

“We’re proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As Ever brand,” Meghan said in a statement in July.

“My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision.”

The updated agreement also followed reports that the couple’s original Netflix deal would not be renewed in its original form. The couple first signed a reported $100 million Netflix deal in 2020.

Since signing with the streamer in 2020, Harry and Meghan have produced several high-profile projects.

Their 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan remains Netflix’s most-watched documentary debut to date. Other releases also include Live to Lead, Heart of Invictus and Polo.

Meanwhile, Meghan’s lifestyle series With Love, Meghan, has already aired two seasons and a holiday special.
