Royal fans have been left divided over Katie Melua’s performance at Kate Middleton’s Together at Christmas carol service.

The singer gave a rousing rendition of White Christmas at Princess Kate’s Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey. The festive event was filmed at the beginning of December, but will be broadcast in the UK on ITV on Christmas Eve.

This week, the Nine Million Bicycles singer shared a sneak preview of her performance with her fans on Instagram, alongside a sweet thank you message to the Princess of Wales.

“What an honour it was to sing at The Princess of Wales’ ‘Together at Christmas’ Carol Service at @westminsterabbeylondon,” Katie wrote. “The full service will be airing on ITV at 7:25pm this Christmas Eve.”

She continued: “It was my first time performing ‘White Christmas’, thank you to Simon Haw for the brilliant new arrangement. And thank you to the Princess of Wales for having me, it was unbelievably special to be a part of it.”

“Oh I could listen to her sing all day,” one person gushed in the comment section. “What an amazing voice and stunning young lady.”

Another fan likewise told Katie: “Such a well deserved honour @katiemeluaofficial. You’ve one of the most beautiful and unique voices.”

A third person also said: “How beautiful is that!” and a fourth: “Katie, this is excellence”.

While listeners seemed to unanimously agree that Katie has a gorgeous voice, a few weren’t so keen on the new take on the classic Christmas song.

“Nice voice but you shouldn’t mess with one of the classic Christmas songs…” commented one person.

A second also agreed: “Why change a beautiful classic!”

“Why change the melody, that’s not the way the song was written!” said a third, nevertheless adding: “Very pretty though.”

A fourth person also wrote: “Lovely voice but I do feel a better arrangement would have suited her voice better.”

Who else performed at Together at Christmas?

This year’s Together at Christmas concert celebrated “love in all its forms”. Readings linked to this theme were read by Prince William, Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Babatunde Aléshé and Joe Locke.

There were musical performances from Cornish folk group Fisherman’s Friends, Dan Smith and Griff, as well as young musicians from North London community group Platinum Performing Arts. Unfortunately, Hannah Waddingham was forced to pull out last minute.

The concert also featured a tribute to the late Duchess of Kent, who sadly died in September.

Royal Carols: Together At Christmas will air at 7.25pm on ITV1 and ITVX on Christmas Eve. There will also be a repeat showing on Christmas Day morning.
