The statement then finished up with the words: “Take care and stay safe.”

Later on in the day, the Balmoral Castle team issued a further update to followers, which read: “**UPDATE** – Balmoral will remain closed tomorrow (Saturday 3rd January), with plans to reopen on Sunday at 11am, weather permitting.”

Why has Balmoral Castle shut?

The Met Office has issued Aberdeenshire, where Balmoral is located, with an amber weather warning for snow and ice until midday on Saturday.

Their website explains: “Heavy snow showers will become more frequent and may merge to give longer spells of snow at times. The area and period covered by this warning are when the heaviest and most disruptive snow is thought most likely during the current cold spell, with existing yellow warnings covering a wider area and a longer period.”

They then go on to predict: “Further accumulations of 10-20cm are likely at low levels with 30-40cm possible on high ground. Windy conditions will also result in some drifting of snow and temporary blizzard conditions.”

It is not the first time the royal residence has had to shut due to adverse weather. Balmoral briefly closed its doors back in November during a previous spell of wintry weather.

However, new snowy snaps nevertheless went down a treat with royal fans on Instagram.

Fans gush over Balmoral

“Looks like a beautiful Christmas cake lightly dusted with icing sugar,” one person commented.

Another follower gushed: “Oh my word, what a stunning photograph, I was there is summer and wonderful then but this just magical.”

Somebody else also said: “Isn’t this scene just glorious? A Scottish view in winter at its best. You can understand why our late Queen loved it so, a haven at any time of year.”

Queen Elizabeth II would often spend her summers at Balmoral. King Charles has continued the tradition since he became monarch.
