Meghan Markle set to be in 'awkward position' amid Prince Harry's UK security decision

Meghan might not be 'eager' to return to the UK

Meghan Markle could soon find herself in an “awkward position” as Prince Harry edges closer to regaining full security protection in the UK, according to a royal expert.

The Duke of Sussex’s security arrangements are currently being reassessed by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC).

After stepping back from royal duties in 2020, Harry lost his automatic taxpayer-funded police protection. He has since launched multiple legal challenges to overturn that decision.

Meghan Markle in ‘awkward position’ over Prince Harry’s security reinstatement

Sources close to the Sussexes told The Mail on Sunday that a new RAVEC risk assessment, prompted by a personal appeal to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and reports of a stalker incident, has all but secured the outcome Harry wanted.

“It’s now a formality,” the source claimed. “Security is now nailed on for Harry.”

But this potential victory could come with a new challenge: Meghan.

According to royal author Christopher Andersen, the Duchess of Sussex may feel conflicted.

“This [update] puts Meghan in a rather awkward position,” he told Us Weekly. “I really don’t think she is eager to return to what she sees as a somewhat hostile environment.”

Meghan has not visited the UK since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022. In contrast, Harry has made several solo trips. His latest visit was in September 2025, when he met with his father, King Charles.

Still, Andersen noted that improved security could be the key to unlocking something far more important: a relationship between the king and his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

“If Harry and Meghan do return to London with Archie and Lilibet,” Andersen said, “it will be so the children can begin to forge some sort of real relationship with their grandfather, the king.

Charles is a huge softy when it comes to his grandkids. I’m sure they’d be welcomed with open arms.”

Prince Harry ‘desperate’ for King Charles to have relationship with Archie and Lilibet

Meanwhile, friends of the Duke of Sussex say he’s “desperate” for a reunion between King Charles and the children.

Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet reportedly have not seen their grandfather since the Platinum Jubilee in June 2022.

A source told The Sun, “Harry has made it clear that he would love his dad to come and visit him and the family. He knows that they are strained. But he has mentioned several times a hope that his father can have a relationship with his grandchildren.”

King Charles is reportedly due to visit the United States in April alongside Queen Camilla, with an invitation for a meeting with US President Donald Trump as part of the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Harry is said to be hopeful that the monarch will also carve out time to visit the Sussexes at their Montecito home during the trip.
