Kate Middleton, who is celebrating her 44th birthday today, was once reportedly left “crushed” following a decision made by Prince William.

William and Kate have been married for almost 15 years. They first met in the early 2000s at university.

But like many relationships, it seems the couple have had their ups and downs.

According to one royal author, a decision made by William in 2008 apparently left Kate feeling upset.

Kate Middleton left ‘crushed’ over Prince William decision

In September 2008, it was announced that Prince William would be training to become a full-time pilot with the Royal Air Force‘s Search and Rescue Force.

At the time, Buckingham Palace confirmed the prince would begin his 18-month training course with the RAF in January 2009. They also said that if successful on the course, which he was, he would become a fully operational Search and Rescue pilot in 2010. They added that once operational, a typical tour for a pilot in the SARF would be 30 to 36 months.

But apparently, the move caught William’s then-girlfriend Kate off guard.

As reported by the Mirror, author Katie Nicholl wrote in her book, Kate: The Future Queen: “With that single decision, Kate’s life was turned upside down. She had expected a proposal once William had completed his military training, but instead, she was forced to accept that there would be no engagement any time soon. Kate would have to wait even longer.”

‘Her frustration was understandable’

She added: “Was Kate prepared to join him? She supported his desires and ambitions, but privately she was crushed. William was asking her to be an army wife – without the nuptials. Her frustration was understandable.”

Of course, it did work out for the pair. They later got engaged in late 2010, married the following April and are now parents to three children.

How Princess Catherine could celebrate her birthday

Earlier this week, a former royal butler shared his thoughts on how the Princess of Wales could celebrate her birthday on Friday.

Speaking to Heart Bingo, Grant Harrold said: “All royal birthdays are celebrated in some shape and form. There’ll be a celebration, and food-wise, she’ll be eating some of the things that she likes.”

As for gifts, Grant revealed what he thinks King Charles could give his beloved daughter-in-law.

He said: “The king would normally give a personal gift – something from his private collection of things that he likes to give people. It could also be something personal to do with his mother or grandmother.”

He revealed it could also be a “bench or some roses for her garden”.

When it comes to the Prince of Wales, Grant thinks the future king could give his wife something special too.

He said: “It could either be something jewellery-based, or it could be something that she needs for the home.” But Grant also said that the royals “like to give silly presents” so Wills could do that!

Happy birthday to the Princess of Wales!
