King Charles has 'learnt to live with tissue of lies' about his marriage with Princess Diana

King Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage was under much scrutiny, even after their 1996 divorce.

From infidelity to lack of compatibility, many observers believed they knew why the then-Prince and Princess of Wales’s marriage broke down.

King Charles has ‘come to terms’ with the misconceptions about his marriage with Princess Diana

However, the monarch is said to have come to terms with the fact that the public do not know the truth.

In his new book, The Windsor Legacy, author Robert Jobson acknowledges that whilst King Charles was having an affair with his now wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, that it wasn’t just his behaviour that lead to the end of his marriage with Princess Diana.

Jobson claims that Princess Diana also played her part.

Because of that, King Charles has reportedly had to learn to deal with the “tissue of lies” surrounding his marriage to Diana.

“His detractors focus on his neglect of his young bride and his adultery. Branding him unfit for kingship, while overlooking her many affairs,” Robert Jobson wrote in the royal biography.

This largely is due to the then-Prince of Wales admitting to infidelity in a 1994 interview, where he admitted that their marriage became “irretrievably broken down”.

The public were on Princess Diana’s side

This tell-all discussion didn’t help Prince Charles, in fact, the consensus was very much that Princess Diana had been treated wrongly.

In her 1995 BBC Panorama interview, where she described her relationship with Charles as “crowded,” Diana won over the public with her candid recollections, stating: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

“What frustrates The King even now is that Diana’s version of what happened is still believed, despite being, in his view, ‘a tissue of lies’ fed to a sympathetic but gullible press,” Jobson penned. “It is wrong in his opinion that they have become ‘historical fact.'”

Jobson goes on to claim that King Charles hasn’t tried to rewrite history, instead he has learned to live with this “distorted images,” as no amount of effort can “erase the stains” on his damaged reputation.

“He feels he let down not only the monarchy but also himself and Diana by not calling off the wedding, when he knew it was wrong,” the author added.

Princess Diana allegedly didn’t blame Camilla

In a chat with royal biographer Ingrid Seward, before Princess Diana tragically died in 1997, the princess allegedly claimed that she didn’t blame Camilla Parker Bowles for the breakdown of her marriage with Charles.

“She said to me just before she died, ‘It wasn’t Camilla that ruined our marriage. It was the people around Charles,'” Ingrid recalled.

“I could never unpick that comment and quite understand what it meant,” she said. “But I also remember Diana’s father saying how tricky the royal household was.”

Ingrid is the editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine. She is also the author of The Queen and Di.

Ingrid admitted that the comment stuck in her mind, but it has been difficult to fully decipher.
