As Prince William and Kate Middleton’s nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, has played a key role behind the scenes during even the most high-profile royal events.

The Norland-trained nanny has cared for Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis for many years.

She was recently awarded a Royal Victorian Medal (Silver) in the New Year Honours list.

But long before her recent recognition, Maria played a surprising behind-the-scenes role in one of the most high-profile royal events of the past decade: the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding on May 19,  2018, at St George’s Chapel was seen by millions across the globe.

But behind the scenes, Maria was doing what she does best: comforting and caring for the youngest members of the royal family.

While she was of course responsible for keeping Prince George and Princess Charlotte calm and well-behaved during the ceremony, Maria also had an unexpected responsibility.

She was photographed comforting two-year-old Zalie Warren, Prince Harry’s goddaughter and the youngest bridesmaid in the wedding party.

Zalie, the daughter of Lady Zoe and Jake Warren, reportedly became overwhelmed during the ceremony and was seen in tears.

Maria, dressed in her classic Norland uniform, gently stepped in to soothe her.

Maria Teresa Borrallo’s work with the royal family

Since joining the royal household in 2014, Maria has been a constant presence in the lives of the Wales children. She even previously lived with the family at Kensington Palace.

Reportedly educated at the prestigious Norland College in Bath, Maria follows a traditional but modern approach.

She reportedly enforces key rules that promote healthy habits. This includes encouraging children to try every food on their plate and involving the kids in kitchen preparation.

Meanwhile, Maria’s influence extends beyond behaviour and mealtimes. According to reports, she’s played a key role in language development for the Wales children.

Fluent in Spanish, Maria has reportedly been teaching the children to speak Spanish from an early age. This move is reportedly fully supported by Prince William and Princess Kate, who are both multilingual.

Royal commentator Danielle Stacey told HELLO!: “Given the fact that George, Charlotte, and Louis will probably carry out full-time royal duties in future and will meet people from all over the world, it’s no wonder that the Princess of Wales wants her children to be confident linguists.

“Kate also spent time in Chile on her gap year, and no doubt will have picked up some of the language. And of course, it helps that the children have their very own tutor in the form of their nanny Maria.”

According to reports, by the time Princess Charlotte started nursery, she could already count in Spanish.
