Meghan Markle tipped for UK return for special reason on 'one condition'

The trip is reportedly dependent on the outcome of Harry's security review

After four years away, Meghan Markle could make a UK visit this summer to support Prince Harry at a major Invictus Games event.

The Duchess of Sussex, 44, is reportedly hoping to join Prince Harry in Birmingham on July 10 for an event marking the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games.

The trip would mark her first visit to Britain since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022.

Sources claim that plans are already underway for Meghan to attend the summer celebration, but only if the couple receive approval for taxpayer-funded police protection while in the UK.

“Security is always going to be the deciding factor in this,” one insider told The Sun.

Meghan Markle ‘planning return to the UK’

Prince Harry is reportedly waiting for the outcome of a long-running dispute over whether he should receive taxpayer-funded full police protection during UK visits.

When he and Meghan stepped back from royal duties and moved to the US in 2020, their security was downgraded. A government committee, known as Ravec, had concluded that because Prince Harry was going to be an infrequent visitor to the UK, his security needs would be assessed on a case-by-case basis instead.

However, recent reports claimed that decision has been under review again. Ravec is reportedly close to issuing a final decision. Harry has previously argued that he and his family do not feel safe in the UK without proper protection.

Last May, the duke lost a court appeal over Ravec’s initial decision to downgrade his security. Even so, insiders told The Mail on Sunday recently that it’s “nailed on” that his team expects government approval this time.

If the review is successful, Meghan may join Harry at the Invictus event in the Midlands, continuing her support for the games, which he founded in 2014 to support wounded military personnel.

She has been present at previous one-year countdown events in Canada and Germany.

Meanwhile, Harry reportedly hopes that King Charles will formally open the games when they launch in Birmingham in July 2027.

While formal invitations have not yet gone out, it’s believed that senior royals, including the king, will be invited to participate.

The Invictus Games Foundation is also preparing a series of promotional events across Birmingham this summer.

Prince Harry’s Invictus Games

Meghan has often been at Harry’s side during the build-up to the games. In early 2024, she travelled to Vancouver and Whistler with him to meet athletes and help promote the 2025 Winter Invictus Games.

She was also in Toronto in 2017 and attended the games themselves in The Hague in 2022. However, she skipped the year-ahead ceremony in 2019 due to son Archie’s birth.

In her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, Meghan previously opened up about how difficult it was to be away from her children for extended periods.

“The longest I went without being around our kids was almost three weeks. I was… not well,” the duchess admitted.

Still, her support for the Invictus Games remains a consistent theme in her public appearances.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle make appearance

Meanwhile, in a recent virtual appearance at an Oprah Daily event, hosted by Gayle King, Harry and Meghan also spoke passionately about online safety and digital wellbeing, particularly for children.

The couple took part in the launch of An Amazing Generation, a new book by Jonathan Haidt and Catherine Price, which encourages kids to step away from screens and build real-world connections.

Meghan emphasised the importance of being emotionally present. She argued that encouraging kids to play away from screens also helps parents be more present.

“You cannot replace the feeling of a deep guttural belly laugh. An emoji laugh is not the same physiological response that we need, that our kids need,” she said.

The couple have been vocal about limiting screen time for their own children. They previously launched The Parents’ Network through their Archewell Foundation to support families impacted by online harm.
