New claims from an insider depict just how difficult things have been for Princess Kate Middleton since a security breach at Kensington Palace last month.

Reports sent shock waves through the press in December, as it was reported that an intruder had managed to enter the grounds of Princess Kate and Prince William’s Kensington Palace residence on two separate occasions.

Unsurprisingly, this has left Princess Kate very “shaken”.

Princess Kate Middleton’s ‘deeply unsettled’ emotions after Kensington Palace intrusion

A source told Closer: “This wasn’t a minor scare – it was deeply unsettling. When someone breaches the place you call home, it hits you in the stomach and suddenly, everything feels exposed.”

They went on to claim: “It left them shaken in a way people don’t see. It was lying awake at night, replaying every ‘what if’ in your head. Kate was in tears. She finds this side of royal life unbearable, and the idea that the children could be at risk genuinely terrifies her. However, Kate is strong and she’s trying her best to move past it. She’s told William that she didn’t sign up for their family to live in fear.”

Kate was in tears.

On the 21st and 23rd of December, shortly before Christmas, Derek Egan allegedly climbed over a fence at the palace.

He was said to be wearing a “heavy rucksack”, before being arrested by police officers from the Met Police Royal and Specialist Protection Command in the gardens.

The 39-year-old was held in custody and charged with two counts of trespassing.

William and Kate’s London home

Although the Wales family moved to Forest Lodge, Windsor, in the autumn, they still use Kensington Palace’s Apartment 1A as their London home.

The family were not at Kensington Palace at the time, instead holidaying at Anmer Hall in Norfolk.

However, they had been staying at the London palace just before the intrusions.

This isn’t the first time the Prince and Princess of Wales have endured a near break-in.

In October 2024, two masked raiders crashed through a gate and then scaled a 6ft fence at Windsor Castle.

The Waleses were staying at their nearby home, Adelaide Cottage, at the time.

Intruders on royal grounds

In June 2025, another intruder was also apprehended on the grounds of the Berkshire castle and arrested on suspicion of trespassing on a secure site, as well as possession of class A drugs.

Despite the latest precautions of cordoning off the radius of their Forest Lodge home, the couple are said to “resent” the forward planning such actions take.

They allegedly feel this makes regular daily routines like dog walking or doing the school run “controlled”.

Prince William an Princess Kate ‘didn’t want’ strict security measures

“They both despise the checkpoints, the constant planning, and the feeling of being trapped. It makes them angry and sad in equal measure,” the insider claimed. “Nothing is spontaneous anymore. Even family time comes with risk assessments. It’s exhausting – and it’s the part of royal life they hate the most.”

They concluded, discussing the publics ban from walking near Forest Lodge: “They didn’t want to do it – William hates shutting people out, and Kate hates the sense of isolation. But when it comes to the children, there’s no hesitation. Their safety comes first.”
