King Charles reportedly didn’t like Prince William and Kate Middleton “getting too much publicity,” according to Prince Harry.

The Duke of Sussex, 41, made the claim in his memoir, Spare, which was released three years ago.

According to Harry, his older brother Prince William, 43, “did everything” their father Charles, 77, wanted.

At one point in Spare, set in 2015, Harry claimed the then-Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, then the Duchess of Cornwall, struggled with the publicity William and Kate received.

As reported by HELLO!, Harry wrote: “Willy [Prince William] did everything he [Charles] wanted, and sometimes he didn’t want him to do much, because my dad and Camilla didn’t like Willy and Kate getting too much publicity.”

Royal Insider has contacted Buckingham Palace for comment.

Harry opened up about his royal upbringing, his relationship with his family and his turbulent exit from senior duties in his memoir Spare.

Harry’s claims about William in memoir Spare

In one damning allegation, Prince Harry described an alleged argument with his brother, William.

Harry claimed that the Prince of Wales called his wife, Meghan Markle, “difficult”, “rude” and “abrasive”.

He then wrote: “[William] set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor.

“I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”

Harry claimed William later left, “looking regretful, and apologised”.

The duke’s memoir sent shockwaves through the palace. Last May, during an interview with the BBC, Harry briefly mentioned his decision to write a book.

He said: “Of course, some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book. But I would love reconciliation with my family.”

Meanwhile, in a separate interview in September 2025, Harry defended his decision to put pen to paper.

Harry told The Guardian: “I know that [speaking out] annoys some people and it goes against the narrative. The book? It was a series of corrections to stories already out there. One point of view had been put out and it needed to be corrected.

“I don’t believe that I aired my dirty laundry in public. It was a difficult message, but I did it in the best way possible. My conscience is clear.”
