It is well know that the royals have very busy schedules, especially King Charles and Princess Kate.

Both royals have experienced pared-back routines in previous years due to their gruelling cancer treatment journeys, but now, both royals appear to be in full swing with their duties for the crown.

However, both Charles and Kate are said to take the time to fulfil a shared hobby. Something King Charles has allegedly inspired the Princess of Wales to do more of.

King Charles’ love for nature

Jack Stooks, who dedicated 20 years as a gardener at King Charles’ Highgrove estate, has shared a glimpse into the Princess of Wales and king’s personal downtime and how they recharge away from royal visits and responsibilities.

Speaking to Smooth Spins Casino, he discussed the various activities King Charles, Princess Kate and Prince William enjoy to wind down.

Jack Stooks reminded us of how King Charles has a huge passion for painting. And he also highlighted that although painting can be done inside, King Charles spends a lot of time outdoors and prioritises his time with nature.

He said: “When Charles paints, it’s usually in Scotland during the afternoon, either when he’s feeling a bit tired or after a walk. On his walks, he often carries a shoulder bag and sketches as he goes. Even on overseas tours, he finds time to paint. The same goes for Highgrove. He’s been doing it for years. He truly loves to draw, and it’s something he’s consistently made time for.”

Undoubtedly, King Charles also has green fingers.

King Charles’s shared hobby with Princess Kate

Jack added: “He loves a garden. Whenever he has spare time, he’s out gardening. He’ll find jobs to do, like weeding areas, removing docks or nettles, or pruning overhanging branches. He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty! When you see him planting trees at events, it’s clear he knows exactly what he’s doing.”

And it seems the king’s love for being at one with nature has inspired Princess Kate to get stuck in with gardening too.

“Kate loves to be outdoors and she’s very into gardening. More so than William,” Jack went on to say. “I’d often see her walking around the gardens at Highgrove and admiring Charles’ vision or even his own handiwork. She’s clearly been inspired by him, as well as her own family’s love of nature.”

Princess Kate describes nature as her ‘sanctuary’

Amid her battle with cancer, Kate even said, in a video shared for Mental Health Awareness week in May 2025, that nature has been her “sanctuary” whilst going through her healing journey.

She gushed: “The natural worlds capacity to nurture us, to inspire us and help us heal and grow is boundless.”

William and Kate also share one similarity in particular that Jack believes encourages the couple to embrace a more playful pace when away from royal duties.

He said: “William and Kate are full of playful energy and have often been spotted at public events racing each other or trying to outdo one another in sports. It’s all in good fun. And it’s clear they both love being outdoors and staying active. Their holidays tend to reflect that, too. As they enjoy trips where they can get moving, from skiing down snowy slopes to other adventure-filled activities.”
