Michael Strahan’s 2023 interview with Prince Harry on Good Morning America, without Meghan Markle, sparked a whirlwind of reactions, and not all of them were positive.

Ahead of the release of Prince Harry’s explosive memoir Spare in January 2023, the Duke of Sussex sat down with the popular morning show host to discuss everything from his military career and childhood grief to his complicated relationships with King Charles and Prince William.

He also spoke openly about his wife, Meghan, who was notably absent from the interview, and the “missed opportunity” the royal family had with her.

Michael Strahan received backlash after Prince Harry interview

Many viewers weren’t impressed by Harry’s appearance on the show and took to social media to vent their frustration.

One Twitter user tweeted Michael: “You should be ashamed, as should ABC.”

Another wrote: “I lost all respect for you Michael.”

A third added: “Just can’t Michael, enough is enough. I’m really disappointed that you even wasted your time.”

Still, not all feedback was negative. Many fans praised Michael’s journalistic skills.

“Michael is amazing. Can’t wait for the interview,” one fan wrote.

“I’m excited. Can’t wait to read the book too,” said another.

“Thank you, Michael. It was a compassionate and informative interview with a man whose journey I follow closely,” a third added.

Prince Harry speaks about Meghan Markle in interview

In the interview, Harry spoke candidly about alleged “unconscious bias” in the royal family.

“It’s not racism, but unconscious bias, if not confronted… can move into racism,” he said. “There was an enormous missed opportunity with my wife.”

When asked to elaborate, Harry replied: “Representation is what she said to me right from the beginning. And I, as a privileged white man, didn’t really understand what she was talking about.”

He also reflected on his complicated relationship with his brother Prince William. Harry called William both his “beloved brother” and “arch-nemesis” in Spare.

“I think she [his mother, Princess Diana] would be sad,” Harry told Michael of their strained relationship. “I think she’d be looking at it long-term to know that there are certain things that we need to go through to be able to heal the relationship.”

Meanwhile, Michael later spoke out about his experience reading Spare and sitting down with the duke.

“I read the book from the first page to the last. You’re amazed at how open he is,” Michael said, as reported by HELLO!. “It’s a story and a conversation with him about healing.”

He added: “To see him where he is right now, it shows how much he’s really had to work to find himself.”
