Inside Princess Michael of Kent's 'strained' relationship with the royal family including her 'scathing words' about Diana and Camilla
Princess Michael of Kent had some choice words for the senior royals
Once upon a time, Princess Michael of Kent allegedly made some pretty shocking remarks about Princess Diana and Queen Camilla.
Statements so shocking, that they reportedly wore on her bond with the royals.

Princess Michael of Kent’s relationship with Queen Elizabeth
When Princess Michael of Kent attended Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral in 2022, she was said to have owed Queen Elizabeth a special debt.
Prince Michael had to convince Queen Elizabeth for permission to marry the former Baroness Marie Christine von Reibnitz, now Princess Michael of Kent.
This was because she was a Catholic and a divorcee. Prince Michael convinced Lord Mountbatten of Burma, who was Prince Philip‘s uncle and confidant, to persuade the queen to approve of the union.
Queen Elizabeth did allow this, but only if Prince Michael gave up his spot in the line of succession.
This approval from Queen Elizabeth left the family indebted to the monarch. And the couple were said to go on and enjoy a successful marriage.
Michael and Maria tied the knot at Vienna Town Hall in 1978. Just two weeks after she was divorced from her first husband, English banker Thomas Troubridge.
They have been described as one of the royal family’s most enduring marriages. They share two children, Lord Freddie Windsor and Lady Gabriella Kingston.
Apparently, when Lord Mountbatten lobbied Queen Elizabeth and as Princess Michael of Kent’s lineage was explained to the late monarch she responded quite bluntly.
Queen Elizabeth was said to have tersely replied: “Too grand for us.”
Princess Michael of Kent’s comments about the royal family
Princess Michael of Kent has been part of The Firm for 48 years.
As she celebrates her 81st birthday today, a famous story including her surprising words about the senior royals is coming to light again.
The princess, who has previously been described as “more Royal than the Royals” and nicknamed “Princess Pushy”, is under the spotlight again.
But not for the right reasons…
Instead, a story where Princess Michael of Kent broke the royal family’s motto of “never complain, never explain,” is doing the rounds again.
In 2000, Princess Michael of Kent sat down with W magazine. In this discussion she explained that she has more royal blood than some of the royals.
“The fact is,’ she said, “of those who married into the family since Prince Philip, I had more royal blood. It’s just a genealogical thing. A fact of life.”
She also claimed that Queen Elizabeth’s comment about the then Baroness being more “grand” than them had greatly amused Lord Mountbatten.
Her claims about her ‘royal blood’
“I was not born a Royal Highness so technically I am a commoner. But I happen to have a lot of royal blood,” she told W at the time. “So, he was telling the Queen about my grand ancestry. About how I was descended from Charlemagne, this king, that king, this queen. Mountbatten was a genealogist…so he laid it on a bit thick until she finally turned to him and said: ‘Well Dickie, she sounds a bit too grand for us.'”
Five years later, Princess Michael of Kent appeared to be in hot water with the queen again.
This time, she had made a slew of unflattering remarks about senior royals to an undercover News of the World reporter, who became known as ‘The Fake Sheik’, Mazher Mahmood.
The conversation was taped secretly by the reporter, catching Princess Michael of Kent out as she accused Prince Charles of using Diana as a “convenient womb” to produce an heir.
She was also said to have described Princess Diana as “bitter”, “nasty” and “strange”.

Princess Michael of Kent predictions about Queen Camilla
Princess Michael of Kent was also said to have predicted that Camilla would become queen. This comment was despite this idea being a contradiction to official guidance from Buckingham Palace at the time.
She also guessed that King Charles would never hand over the throne to Prince William in the future.
Royal Insider has contacted Buckingham Palace for comment.

Princess Margaret’s ‘thoughts’ on Princess Michael of Kent
It seems that Princess Margaret also had a strained relationship with the princess, as described in the book Princess Margaret: A Biography, by author Theo Aronson.
He demonstrated the antipathy between Princess Margaret and her cousin’s wife.
“Equally instantaneous was the strong dislike she took to her cousin’s wife, Princess Michael of Kent,” he wrote, “whom she is alleged to have regarded as a limelight-seeking adventuress far too keen to force her way into the Royal Family’s inner circle.”
