Prince William's words on title change after receiving honour from King Charles
William became the Prince of Wales in 2022Prince William underwent a major title change in September 2022 upon the death of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.
On September 8 of that year, Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96. She had reigned for more than 70 years, making her the longest-reigning monarch in UK history.
Upon her death, her eldest son, Charles, immediately became king. His eldest son, Prince William, immediately became his father’s heir and later took on the title of Prince of Wales.

What Prince William thought of title change
King Charles held the Prince of Wales title for 64 years. He became the Prince of Wales in 1958.
Days after his grandmother’s death, Prince William made a pledge over his new title. His wife, Catherine, also took on a title change, becoming the Princess of Wales.
William’s late mother, Princess Diana, previously held the title.
They will seek to live up to the proud contribution that members of the royal family have made in years past.
Kensington Palace said the prince expressed that he and Catherine would “do their part to support the aspirations of the Welsh people”.
“The prince and princess look forward to celebrating Wales’s proud history and traditions as well as a future that is full of promise,” the palace said.
“They will seek to live up to the proud contribution that members of the royal family have made in years past.”

King Charles’ words about William taking on Prince of Wales title
In his first address to the nation after Queen Elizabeth II’s death, King Charles confirmed William and Catherine’s title changes.
He said: “Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru. With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations.”
The king said they would help “bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given”.
Speaking about holding the Prince of Wales title for six decades, Charles added that he felt “so greatly privileged”.

Will Prince George become Prince of Wales when William is king?
It’s expected that William and Catherine’s eldest son, Prince George, will take on the Prince of Wales title when William becomes king.
As he’ll be his father’s heir apparent, George will likely take on the title like William has done with Charles.
While it’s expected to be a long way off until George is king one day, Prince William has already discussed the type of monarchy he wants to create for his son.
Speaking on Eugene Levy’s Apple TV show The Reluctant Traveler, William said: “Obviously, I want to create a world in which my son is proud of what we do, a world and a job that actually does impact people’s lives for the better.”
