King Charles is known to share a close bond with his grandchildren, but the time they spend together rarely makes it to the public eye.

An unearthed video is doing the rounds again. And it shows a very sweet moment shared between King Charles, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

King Charles’s sweet moment with his grandchildren

This throwback clip was recorded as the royals rehearsed Charles’s Coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey, in the run up to the big day on May 6, 2023.

In the video, which has attracted a lot of attention on social media since it was reshared by fan account @katemiddletonprincessofwalesuk, King Charles can be seen greeting the Prince and Princess of Wales.

He then shares his affection with three of his grandchildren.

The monarch walked up to the Wales family inside Westminster Abbey and took a moment to greet them individually.

He first shared a kiss on the cheek with Prince William, then one with Princess Kate.

Kate was seen dutifully managing an elegant curtsy right after their embrace, unsurprisingly.

King Charles then sweetly leant down to hug Princess Charlotte, Prince George and Prince Louis, one by one.

This fleeting yet heartfelt moment gave a brief look into the private world of the royals. And a sweet glimpse at what ‘Grandpa Wales,’ a moniker given by George, Charlotte and Louis, is like behind the scenes.

Of course, fans of the royals were quick to share their praise in the comment section.

“This is so sweet! I think what makes it so moving – for me, anyhow – is that, forget about their titles, what’s at the heart of this capture, is the fact that they’re just a loving family. Heartwarming to see,” gushed one.

“Just beautiful a family with so much love and respect for each other,” chimed in another.

A third praised: “Wow! King Charles joined his family with so much love.”

“Beautiful moment between family,” added a fourth.

Child Psychologist discusses the royal family and their bond

Dr Sasha Hall, a HCPC-registered Senior Education and Child Psychologist, has since discussed how important it is for children to have a close bond with their grandparents.

“Grandparents can become incredibly important secondary attachment figures, offering warmth, consistency, and affection that help children feel safe and emotionally held,” Dr Hall told Hello.

“An affectionate grandparent gives a child another relationship where they experience closeness, reassurance and love. That matters because children build their sense of security through repeated experiences of being comforted and valued.”

She went on to say: “Seeing public warmth, like King Charles hugging and kissing his grandchildren, reflects a wider cultural shift too. Affection across generations is becoming something we celebrate rather than hide, and that sends a strong message to children that love, comfort, and closeness are normal and lifelong.”
