Sandringham is a special place for the royalsKing Charles’ Sandringham Estate issued a statement on Tuesday to confirm a closure amid safety concerns.
The king, 77, inherited the Norfolk estate when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died in September 2022.
The beloved estate usually hosts the royal family over the Christmas period. It’s also open throughout the year, for members of the public to visit if they wish.
But this week, part of the estate was forced to close amid bad weather.

Statement on King Charles’ Sandringham Estate
The statement read on the estate’s official Instagram page: “Notice: Due to high winds, we have made the decision to close the Children’s Play Area for the safety of our visitors.
“We advise you to take extra care when exploring the Estate grounds today.”
It comes as the Met Office warned of Storm Chandra, which was forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the UK on Tuesday.
Sandringham visiting information
Sandringham’s Children’s Play Area is just one aspect of the estate that visitors can enjoy. The area is free and open to access all year round.
Meanwhile, visitors can also enjoy 20,000 acres of Royal Parkland which features “two winding, way-marked trails, as well as unmarked footpaths, which venture off the beaten track into the woodlands”.
And if some visitors are in the mood for some adventure, the estate also offers a 20-point orienteering trail to follow.

Can you visit Sandringham House?
If the weather is rubbish, visitors can also tour Sandringham House. Sandringham House and Gardens will reopen to the public on March 28, 2026.
They’ll remain open until October 9, except for closures between July 19 and 28 and August 20 and 23.

His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, did the same for many years.

Sandringham isn’t the only royal residence that’s had to announce closures recently due to bad weather.
Earlier this month, the king’s beloved Scottish residence Balmoral Castle closed to the public amid snowy conditions.
