Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor reportedly had a “showdown” with a royal biographer many years ago.

Robert Hardman, royal commentator and biographer, has shared details of the alleged encounter with the former prince.

It reportedly took place around the same time that Andrew had split from Sarah Ferguson. The former couple split in 1992, after marrying in 1986.

Mr Hardman is known for his royal biographies, including Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story and Queen of Our Times: The Life of Elizabeth II.

He was also a reporter at The Telegraph.

Speaking on the Daily Mail’s programme Royal Confidential recently, Mr Hardman opened up about having the “biggest showdown” with Andrew.

He said: “I mean, probably the biggest showdown I had was with Prince Andrew and it was at the time that he’d obviously broken up with the duchess. Well, he’s obviously no longer the duke, she’s no longer the duchess, but the duke and duchess had split up.”

Mr Hardman explained that he had written an article on financial arrangements. He explained: “There was a story to do with the financial arrangements and it was to do with the fact that she wasn’t being given that much. She was running out of money and I can’t even remember the exact details.”

Andrew ‘very cross’ over claims about his dog

A few days later, Mr Hardman attended and covered a royal charity golf event, which was attended by Andrew and Sarah.

The author revealed: “I talked to [the duchess] and she said, ‘Oh, you must you must come and meet my husband.'”

According to Mr Hardman, Sarah introduced him as: “Darling, this is Mr. Hardman from the Telegraph.”

The biographer then claimed: “[Andrew] went, ‘You’re the one. You’re the one.’ And I thought, ‘Here we go.'”

I mean, probably the biggest showdown I had was with Prince Andrew.

However, according to Mr Hardman, Andrew wasn’t annoyed by the financial arrangements article. He was reportedly actually annoyed over an article about his dog.

Mr Hardman claimed: “He said, ‘You’re the one who wrote that very inaccurate thing about my dog.’ Out of all the things. I think it was a line at the end where I had said his dog was very territorial and had bitten somebody.”

He alleged that Andrew was “very cross about what I’ve written about the dog and not about the other stuff at all”.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor scandal

Since then, a lot has happened with Andrew. Over the years, he has faced scrutiny over his association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Last year, the scrutiny intensified after emails emerged allegedly showing Andrew in contact with Epstein in February 2011. However, in his BBC Newsnight interview in 2019, Andrew claimed he had cut contact with Epstein in December 2010.

Andrew has also faced allegations of sexual assault. Virginia Giuffre alleged she was made to sleep with Andrew on three occasions when she was 17, after being trafficked by Epstein.

Andrew has always vehemently denied the allegations.

In October last year, King Charles initiated a formal process to have Andrew’s royal titles and honours removed amid the mounting scrutiny. He’ll also leave his Royal Lodge home at some point this year, and will reportedly move to the Sandringham Estate.
