Carole Middleton had a strict rule with “no exceptions” that taught her three children – Kate, Pippa, and James – some valuable lessons, it was once revealed.

The mum-of-three, who turns 71 this weekend, had a no-nonsense approach to one aspect of family life that her kids have never forgotten…

Carole Middleton’s strict family rule

During a chat with the Daily Mail back in 2016, Kate’s younger sister, Pippa, opened up about how their mother taught them to “eat properly” when they were children.

Pippa, now 42, explained how the Middleton family would eat together three times a day at home, and there would never be any children’s food available.

Whatever the adults cooked, that is what was on offer.

“As children, we didn’t have anything different; we always ate what our parents ate. My mother and father took the view, and I agree, that you don’t need to make different food for children. We had to eat everything on our plate and not be fussy about food,” Pippa revealed during the chat.

Carole’s no-nonsense attitude

Pippa then continued, admitting there were times after a meal when she would sit at the dinner table for a while after not having eaten what was in front of her.

However, she confessed that she soon learned to like “everything”.

“There were times when I would be sitting at the table after lunch or dinner, having not eaten something because I decided I didn’t like it and actually remaining there until I had eaten it,” she said.

Laughing, she then added: “We had to stay at the table until we had eaten everything. There were no exceptions. And in the end I liked everything because I had to.”

Carole’s dishes

Pippa also revealed that it was Carole who did all the cooking in the Middleton household when she was growing up.

Speaking about the dishes that mum Carole would cook, Pippa described it as “proper stuff, home-cooked food”.

Listing some of the foods she enjoyed – or was forced to enjoy – as a child, Pippa listed “shepherd’s pie, liver and mash with an onion gravy, kidneys” and mussels.

It seems as though kidneys has stayed a part of sister Kate’s diet into adulthood. During an engagement at Oxford House Nursing Home in February 2023, she spoke to some of the residents about the meals they enjoyed there.

One of the residents, Nora, told the future queen that some of her favourite foods at the home were “kidneys and Brussels sprouts”.

Kate was reportedly enthusiastic with her reply, exclaiming, “Oh, kidneys! I love kidneys too!”
