Kate Middleton and Prince William made a major life decision a few years back for the sake of their children.

The royal couple are proud parents to Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and seven-year-old Prince Louis.

And back in 2022 they decided to swap the bustle and bustle of city life in London for the countryside of Windsor. However, it turns out there was a rather relatable reason behind the future king and queen’s decision to move.

Why Kate and William moved away from London

In 2022, Kate, William and their three kids moved out of the opulent Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. Instead, they went to live in the two-storey four-bedroom Adelaide Cottage in the Home Counties.

The lush property is situated within the huge 655-acre Windsor Home Park, and is near Windsor Castle.

They surprised a lot of people when they moved there.

And in 2025, Kate candidly opened up about why she and William decided to make the big move. While speaking with soldiers from the Irish Guard during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Kate shared: “We are in Windsor at the moment.”

As PEOPLE reports, Kate added: “We were in London but moved there for more green space. It’s close enough to London, not too far away.”

Kate and William ‘surprised a lot of people’

Meanwhile, according to one royal expert and author, the family were “very, very happy” at their Windsor home.

Katie Nicholl explained to OK! in 2024: “Being able to live in the middle of Windsor Home Park, where they’re not overlooked and can come and go in complete privacy, makes the downsize from Kensington Palace worth it on every level. There’s not a huge amount of space, but Adelaide Cottage ticks all the right boxes.”

What’s more, royal commentator Duncan Larcombe also said: “I think they surprised a lot of people when they moved there.

“There are plenty of other places they could have moved to, but Adelaide Cottage fits with their desire as parents to be a normal family, where there aren’t servants and they don’t have 30 rooms. William would much rather have his kids around him, in the rooms next door to where he’s sleeping.”

William and Kate’s move to Forest Lodge

Since then, William and Kate have moved once again. The Wales family now reside at Forest Lodge, also located in Windsor.

The eight-bedroom property, within the grounds of Windsor Great Park, has been dubbed the family’s “forever home”.

One source told the BBC of the family’s big move: “Windsor has become their home. However, over the last few years while they have lived at Adelaide Cottage there have been some really difficult times.

“Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter. It’s an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind.”

During their time at Adelaide Cottage, the family had some tough times. These included Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September 2022 and the Princess of Wales’ cancer battle in 2024.
