Prince William made heartbreaking statement to courtier after shock Kate Middleton split
They were the 'it' couple but things went awry
Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton together have captured the hearts of royal fans over the years.
The Prince and Princess of Wales wed in an unforgettable fairytale wedding in 2011 and since then have appeared to enjoy a happy fifteen year marriage, even welcoming three children.
Their love story is one for royal history, but it wasn’t one without a twist. At one point, Prince William and Kate Middleton even reportedly went their separate ways.

Prince William’s ‘heartbreaking reaction to split with Kate Middleton’
Prince William and Kate famously met at the University of St Andrews in Scotland in 2001, and started dating around late 2002. They were together for almost five years when reports broke that the duo had split.
It was said that Kate had given Wills an ultimatum about their future, with the future-princess eager to settle down.
And in the aftermath of their separation, a saddened Prince William allegedly made a heartbreaking remark to a trusted courtier.
In the new William and Catherine book by the Mirror’s Russell Myers, William was said to have “personally instructed Clarence House to confirm the news that he and Catherine were no longer together”.
In a heart-wrenching five word statement to a courtier, Wills said of his split with Kate that “at least she is free”.
William and Kate’s ‘split’
Myers penned of William and Kate’s split: “In a shock move, William personally instructed Clarence House to confirm the news that he and Catherine were no longer together. But, behind the scenes, there was much going on that suggested this was more than just a difference of opinion. It’s telling that William confided to one senior courtier that, ‘at least she is free.'”
He went on to detail: “This was perhaps the most significant moment in his life since his mother had passed. William revealed a deep distress and anxiety over what a relationship with him represented in the real world. The attention, the constant pressure and expectation. He held these things responsible for contributing to the breakdown of his previous relationships, but now, when it mattered the most, he wondered if he was taking the right course of action, for Catherine or himself.”
Despite their brief blip, the duo were said to reunite within weeks.

Prince William explained brief split with Kate Middleton
When the couple went on to get engaged in 2010, ITV interview Tom Bradby quizzed William and Kate on their split in their engagement announcement interview.
There, Prince William explained what had gone down.
“We were both very young,” William explained. “It was at university. We were sort of both finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff. It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up.”
He added: “It was just sort of a bit of space and a bit of things like that. And it worked out for the better.”
Queen Elizabeth’s approval
Meanwhile, one very special family member was said to be eager for Wills and Kate to get back together…
None other than Queen Elizabeth II herself.

Allegedly, William’s grandmother was hopeful that they could rekindle their romance.
In another extract of his book, Myers claimed that Queen Elizabeth II had encouraged William to rekindle his love with Kate.
She allegedly gave Kate advice on dealing with the pressures of “headstrong husbands”.
The late queen was even said to have discussed the burdens that senior royals can endure.

A deep dive into the world of Prince William and Princess Kate
Although the exact conversations are yet to be revealed, this information gives another glimpse into how The Firm encouraged the romance between William and Kate.
Myers said of his upcoming biography: “I’ve spent almost a decade following The Prince and Princess of Wales as part of the Royal pack and have always believed there’s so much more to the couple than the spectacle reveals.”
He continued: “The result of this biography is a truly intimate portrait of William and Catherine; providing not just unparalleled insight into who they are as individuals, but seismic revelations about them as a couple and the world they inhabit. This biography moves beyond the headlines as it explores love, resilience, and their journey together as they navigate their public duties amid this unprecedented era.”
The book is set to be published on February 26. Will you be giving it a read?
