Mike Tindall and Donald Trump probably weren’t two names you expected to see in the same sentence.

In the latest royal news, Mike has reportedly made a jest in poor taste and is being slammed by viewers who think his latest move is poorly timed due to Donald Trump’s ongoing, controversial antics and the turmoil going on within the royal fold following Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest.

Mike Tindall slammed for controversial Donald Trump ‘inspired’ hat

The former rugby star, podcast host and hubby to Zara Tindall is facing backlash for mirroring one of Donald Trump’s most controversial styles – his Make America Great Again baseball cap.

Former sporting star Mike starred on his podcast, The Good, The Bad and the Rugby, rocking a familiar red cap with bold font, very similar to that of Trump’s notorious MAGA hats.

However, Mike’s said: “Make England Great Again,” alluding to England’s Rugby team and their recent poor performances.

Unfortunately, it seems Mike’s appearance hasn’t really gone down well with some people even dubbing it in “poor taste”.

Some social media users defended Mike, describing it as a joke, albeit in reference to Trump’s ‘team uniform’ for intolerant views.

Others claimed that in the current political climate, this wasn’t a wise move for the former rugby pro.

Mike Tindall leaves fans fuming over poorly timed Donald Trump ‘joke’

One user penned to Reddit in defence of Mike: “People can’t take three seconds to Google for context these days, huh? Gotta fire off that outrage straight away. It’s a reference to how badly the English rugby team is playing right now – lost 31-20 to Scotland, then 42-21 to Ireland, and worst of all played like they’d never seen a rugby field before.

“Poor choice of joke because of how people would react in this polarised age? Certainly. A sign he supports Trump, Farage and the rest? No (he might, IDK, but this isn’t a reason to believe he does).”

Another social media chimed in on the topic, explaining: “It’s a joke about how England is [bleep] at rugby right now.”

Fans rush to Mike’s defence

“Thank Christ for that! Not a wise choice on his part, far too close to the bone – but I hope your context is correct,” replied another commenter, though they seemed torn over whether it was appropriate or not.

Another said: “I don’t think it’s poor taste, the MAGA hats have become a bit of a meme around the world, if anything, he’s indirectly mocking them too. The punchline is ‘I’m a fanatic for the joke-cause, i.e., making England suck less at rugby like they used to.”

Meanwhile, other users weren’t really pleased.

“Is it in poor taste? Yes. Is it political about the current English population? No. It’s about the English rugby team looking and playing pretty terribly. A lot of comments are taking this pretty out of context however, I do agree, in context, still a poor choice of hat,” said one.

Viewers react to Mike’s jest in ‘poor taste’

Meanwhile, another fumed: “When you all go so hard to try and explain something, you’ve already failed!

“He knows how that slogan would be interpreted, but still decided to do so. Especially in this climate when his family is in the headlines every single day. That makes him both dumb and stupid.”

Another Redditor said of the subject: “Mike – mate – with everything going on with the in-laws right now, a Trump joke is not it.”

What’s your verdict?
